this field biologist does a great job highlighting the insidiousness of AI editing

these one-click AI edit buttons are incredibly appealing to many photographers, amateurs and professionals alike, and are framed as innocuous

this is worth sharing and educating people about

this is similar to what I've come to think of as the "reverse turing test"

when people find synthetic text is "good enough" to complete a task (homework, business report, email) it doesn't mean the machine is smart. it means they were asked to produce something that didn't matter

it's diagnostic
So similarly, when we see people who prefer ChatGPT or a similar synthetic text extruding machine as a source of medical information, that means those are people who are under-served in the current system.

One day there's a new star in the sky. Then over the course of a couple months it gets brighter. Then it's bright enough to see during the day. Then one day you're looking up, and one second it's pretty bright and the next the world has ended and everything is on fire.

Similarly, since the time this film was made of the Francesco Maglia workshop in Milan — another top-tier manufacturer — the proprietor Francesco has retired. The 171 year old business is now run by his brother Giorgio and nephew, another Francesco. One wonders if there will be another successor.

So while we're screaming "don't touch Medicaid", the Republican base is saying "if you're gonna touch Medicaid, make sure you tell me how you're gonna take care of me when it's gone." It's a completely different conversation. One that is much more politically tractable.

As someone who kind of wrote a book on it, let me share the number one sign someone is lying to you about politics:

When they claim that, through some unspecified alchemy, paradise and prosperity can be achieved through suffering exclusively by other people.

So, actually, this is really fun; your average oil well takes up ~7,000m². Given that fully a third of all oil wells produce less than 1 BOE per day (1.7MWh) you'd only need 1/18th the land to produce that power via solar.

We're now at explicit white supremacy. The venn diagram of reactionary "debate me" tech bros and white supremacists is pretty much a circle, given enough time for them to finally say it publicly.

Years ago on Twitter I had raised this as a very real possibility that DHH was continuing to devolve and would likely eventually turn into a right-wing reactionary.

At the time it was dismissed as hyperbole, that the community was wrong for disinviting him from RailsConf.

It was the right call.
How are we all feeling about Mr Rails being a full on MAGA Nazi? Now he wants to see the rise of the far right in Europe. Are we ok with him and Tobi controlling most of the Ruby ecosystem? Are we ok with companies sponsoring or attending Rails World?

The idea that Western Civilization will collapse if we let like 1% of people swap genders or whatever is so bizarre to me that I have a hard time even conceptualizing what these people think "Western Civilization" is and what exactly will happen to it in their nightmare gender scenario.

Ralph Fiennes is in this movie! Ain't no way he knew what was about to happen. He's only in the good parts. He's probably livid about the other half of the film they put him in. If I was him, I would be trying to sue somebody.

When pundits argue that Trump will back down when he understands the destruction he is creating, they may be very wrong: Because it may be destruction and chaos that he seeks.

In his mind, this is what may be needed to "make America great again."
