This is me being pontkessly contrarian but re AI usage and management I feel like it's less that management is a fake job and more that being in position of power enables one to be increasingly worse at their job in increasingly visible ways without any personal consequences

This is, unfortunately, part of my self-conception
For every carefree, "Don't stress, things always work themselves out!" person there is at least one extremely anxious, detail-oriented, forward-thinking loved one or coworker who has spent years behind the scenes making sure things work out

Huh. Why make this protein naturally? Sounds like it just slows growth across the board, which seems like a thing evolution tends not to select for.

Maybe it serves a control function in case it's resource limited?

Anyway, I hope these poplars can really go nuts with the growth.
Scientists have identified a protein in poplar that, when turned off, results in increased growth, stronger cell walls and trees that are more disease-resistant.

Please fund my new squirrel company
Good enough robots shouldn't have any need for "robotics companies" to exist. Like there's no "squirrel company" doing well since squirrels gained autonomy.
Only robotics companies that ultimately do well have very clear value propositions. “What if we invent general purpose autonomy” is amateur hour.

First you own the things, then you own the labor, then you own the knowledge
In applying AI to material science, biology, etc, capitalism is trying to shed science.

The point is to substitute the engineering of a machine that can generate what science has hitherto done, but without having people know things. Knowledge ultimately residing in private property is the dream.

Doubly-so for industrial automation (where heavy things can move and explode!)

And yet people keep pushing the idea.
It blows my mind that anyone thinks nondetermimistic automation is a good thing or a preferable way to do programming

This is what drives the political conversation
can’t really express the level of contempt i have for what is just a form of solipsism. “the things that annoy me are the only things that exist and also the worst things imaginable”

In addition to the, uh, problems, I also get carsick in the Model Y's they send. I do not like these cars and wish to avoid them
Hey if there are any Uber or Lyft product people around here, I would pay $1 more each time for a “not a Tesla” option. That company isn’t feeling nearly enough pain

For years, I've longed for a game with the aesthetics of Homeworld, but that is also fun
A Space Rangers style sandbox game in the world of The Expanse would be really fun

Shout out to people routinely working in their 2nd or 3rd language.

Yesterday I gave a 1-hour research seminar in French. Afterwards, my brain was pretty much done for the day.

Respect to the loads of scientists who do this daily (and usually a lot more effectively than me!)

There Is No Antimemetics Division was super fun and I also recommend it!
I know next to nothing about the SCP Foundation and have no inclination to participate, but two nights ago I finally started an ARC of “There is No Antimemetics Division” by Sam Hughes I grabbed on a whim a few months ago. just finished it and holy schnikes what an oddly poignant mindfuck that was
