One of the problems is the extremely odd UK political system.
The Westminster Cabinet contains ministers like:
PM, Chancellor - UK Ministers
Health - English Minister
Transport - England and Wales Minister (I think!)
DWP - GB Ministers

I’d submit that the continent-sized country with ~6 times our population that is also one of the very few advanced economies not to have a national public broadcaster just isn’t a very good or relevant comparator
Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments:
One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

It’s amazing how curated Britain’s historical memory is
The reality is that nobody in the UK really cared
The armed general strike of May 1974 that ended powersharing is memory-holed because it offended a sense of national self
I asked The Times (among others) what their plans for 50th Anniversay were & would they commission a piece from me
None & No

I'm in Nairobi this week for the opening of the inquest into my sister Kate's death here, almost four years ago, which is still very much unsolved. The case has been beset by obstructions and evasions; it's taken us a long time to get this far and there may be more to come.

That this is populist guff shouldn't obscure the significance of Le Pen's RN shifting from total rejection of the EU and Euro to making policy demands within the EU system that accepts it is there to stay
Bardella wants the ECB (read: Banque de France and other Eurosystem banks) to buy an unlimited amount of French debt.

Had two poorly-developed thoughts in my head for years now about radicalisation in later years. One is that there’s nothing more radicalising than when your kids are discussing uni choice not on courses or city amenities, but on accommodation fees. A voice just goes “Burn this all down”.
