It's incredible how almost everything this admin has done will just hit them in the long run, and that it together with barely winning an election that should have been a real blowout is always regarded as politically effective.
there is only the dimmest awareness that trump isn't especially popular and a general presumption that everything he does is politically effective

the primary thing this seems likely to accomplish is encouraging practically every state and federal court in the country to treat the department of justice as a bad faith, hostile adversary and to engage with their lawyers accordingly

The ONLY sense that Trump's power is "unparalleled" is that we have all formed this demented, dangerous consensus that he is not bound by any political, legal, or practical considerations. Our own craven beliefs are giving him power. He doesn't have competence, popularity, or big majorities.
