…and then mass deportation drains the Social Security trust funds of hundreds of billions, hastening insolvency.

Just incredibly self-defeating—and cruel, too.

The lesson is that when the center-left (Dems) betray promises to challenge oligarchy & help the working class, justified anger against oligarchy gets harnessed by the right, allowing a bad Joker-ized version of populist policy to destroy stuff.

It happened 2008-2016 and it's now happening again.

You wouldn't know it from the front pages of NYT or the Post, but a stunning 3-to-5.2 million Americans took to the streets Saturday with a simple message: "No King"

The only national emergency is the law that empowers a mad king
The 1977 law that allows Trump to declare a fake emergency to impose massive tariffs was an invitation to dictatorship.

marvelous @frediotto.bsky.social gives one of the clearest comments about what makes effective climate adaptation - I always think of Fredi as a bit of a rockstar of climate science & here she’s interviewed in the Rolling stone magazine! Good read www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

This is a good, funny sign. But it gets at a key element of what Social Security does. Middle aged people who aren't fully supporting aging parents can fund their kids education. It runs through the whole life cycle.

Said it before, probably gonna keep saying it: the fossil fuel industry is already going through/has been undergoing an energy transition it’s just not the one that mitigates climate risk. Turning CO2 into a commodity, building a massive pipeline and storage infrastructure for compressed carbon…

I would like the people who were in my mentions complaining I was too harsh on Schumer to kindly shut the fuck up forever
In this interview Schumer says he agrees with Trump’s decision to pull $400 million from Columbia. A university in his own state. And he’s unconcerned about the unlawful arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, one of his constituents.

He is a traitor who needs to resign.

I really think year 21 of me screaming about this is going to tip the scales.
1. What you see here is clearest illustration why things are so messed up and why it cannot get any better until this asymmetry is addressed.

Put simply: the right-wing has narrative dominance.

I really need for people to see that the whole cycle of the last few years-- the dangers of the left hysterically exaggerated ("cancel culture") in order to give cover to, sand the rough edges off, distract attention from, the advance of fascism --is a template, a script that's been run repeatedly.

I'm a researcher primarily in adaptation. We are not even adapted to where the climate is today.

If you think you can seawall your way through a 4°C planet, you are straight up dreaming.

Mitigation AND adaptation, or you end up with way more of option 3 for dealing with climate change: suffering.
I’m am adaptation scientist and here’s what I had to say about this—many years ago already.

But we have to have leaders who see the point in fighting. We need leaders who respect our struggle and see themselves as a part of it, not see it as an imposition.
We need leaders motivated by justice, not money and expediency.

And the system we currently have is not designed to produce them.

The goal is making lives better in meaningful ways and, if that requires a knock down dirty fight, then so be it.
We don't fight for order, we fight for justice. We fight for a world made more humane. We fight for the welfare of children and elderly.

We don't sacrifice goals to preserve order.
