A #WeirdLittleGuys update. I gave these cards to @cristadericco.bsky.social’s kids at our belated Christmas exchange in March (it sure has been a year).
Reading Gaudy Night and trying to figure out if a character being pro-eugenics is signifying they’re terrible, or if it’s just the 30’s.

Well this is some ableist garbage. Got wheelchair assistance for my last plane journey due to a broken toe, didn’t realize I had to specify I needed it on landing as well, so “miraculously” hobbled off the plane to request one in the airport. You can’t tell someone’s support needs by looking at them

Pretty sure this is how network notes went on every Xena episode:
Network: So the scene where Xena & Gabrielle declare their love in bed is definitely too gay
Writers: What!? It clearly says “friend” right there!
Network: …why is she playing with Xena’s hair while gazing lovingly into her eyes?

Removing all the em-dashes in my resume & cover letter so people don’t think I used AI—yet another way AI is ruining everything.

Murdoch Mysteries is a goddamn bonkers delight
I directed the episode of MURDOCH MYSTERIES set in 1910 where they invented the internet AND the concept of the nude selfie.
best we've got right now is Murdoch Mysteries, a detective show set in late 1800's Toronto, where the lead characters regularly invent modern technology by accident. Detective Murdoch created the Roomba. Tatiana Maslany's brother plays a gay jewish cop. It's incredible.

When I was at Oxford Brookes University you’d occasionally have Oxford University types be snobs about it (it used to be a polytechnic, the horror). This was obviously classist garbage, but I’m willing to concede that Brookes was dramatically lacking in cats & needs to address that fundamental flaw
I reckon you can learn a lot about the atmosphere in various Oxford colleges by looking at what they choose to name their cats (courtesy of @oxfordclarion.bsky.social ). We should all aspire to the energy of a Teabag, Isambard Kitten Brunel, or an Admiral Flapjack

Still trying to figure out how to describe my recent job history in a cover letter post bookshop—so I had a bookshop that closed because *gestures widely at the economy* but I promise it was a great bookshop. But also I’ve been working an unrelated admin job so I could do that with my free time…

Got jump scared by a horrible, pale spider, only for it to disappear in the time it took me to get a squishing implement. Now it’s just lurking somewhere in my living room…

Shin Godzilla (a film in which politicians, shockingly, eventually come to the realization that maybe they should take an action of some kind in the face of an existential threat) turned out to be excellent election night viewing

Just watched Dracula 2000 and its 19% on Rotten Tomatoes is a travesty—this film is art! I mean it could have used more Jeri Ryan, but that’s true of most things!

The needle covers from my B-12 injections looked like robot legs so I made a #WeirdLittleGuy. Engineering wise it makes no sense, but I don’t care.

Also I don’t think I’ve shared this Little Guy on here yet. A sculpture of my sister’s beautiful cat that I made for my nephew. I didn’t quite capture her full beauty or roundness, but I think I got the eyes.

Today's Love Letter is from the unstoppable @shing.bsky.social. Shing's ode to Making Little Guys is one of the single most nourishing pieces of nonfiction I have ever read. Maybe you need this one as much as I do.

A very polite way of saying ‘Look, we all know this flag is specifically for football or racists’.
An English friend walking down a street with a bunch of Saint George’s Cross flags one time: ‘I was freaked out by all the flags, then I remembered England’s doing well in the World Cup’.
Look at this response from Polanski to Sophie Ridge's attempted gotcha on flags

To *finally* have a mainstream political voice standing up for racialised & minoritised communities being intimidated by the violent fash on our streets

It's really not that hard, is it?

Those willing, by contrast, to trade away the rights and dignity of transgender people or the poor cannot be considered friends of democracy any more than those who were willing to countenance second-class status for blacks and Jews.
Anyway, it is true that democracy will be on the ballot in 2028. But it'll be on the ballot for Democrats well before the general. And the party's task is creating democracy, not defending it. That demands both an attentiveness to structural politics and a willingness to defend the equality of all.

Twice, in different cities, I’ve somehow ended up living close enough to the site of a Christian music festival that I’m unable to escape it in my own home. At least this time I’m not trying to finish a dissertation I guess.

Freshman year of college in Salem, VA (pop about 25,000) got a ride somewhere with guy who closed the windows because “we’re driving through the ghetto.” It was a street with a couple of warehouses & no people around. I made fun of him immediately.
The idea among rightwingers of cities being dangerous extends to the smallest cities possible. I live in a city of maybe 30,000 people, and I remember a coworkers' husband years ago acting like I must witness Taxi Driver-level degradations everyday.
