we are living thorough 10 years of moral collapse. it’s happening everywhere but is concentrated in the US. we have given up on even trying to argue that there must be more to life, both individually and collectively, than bare materialism and power. we must rededicate ourselves to meaningful life.

My Christmas Eve movie is the Halle Berry thriller THE RICH MAN'S WIFE, with Christopher McDonald as the rich man, and Clive Owen and the late Peter Greene as two of the absolute sketchiest dudes one could get involved with, written and directed by Amy Holden Jones of SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE fame.

I read all 3 of Jordan Harper's novels (to date) this year, and they were so exactly what I wanted and needed to be reading, it sent me down a whole path of reassessing what's really important to me in my own creative life. Also, I think the movie's terrific.
If this awful world has room for a petty gripe: I'm blown away by the streaming success of SHE RIDES SHOTGUN. But! Streaming's "shrink the movie the moment the closing credits start" means that most viewers have no idea it's based on a novel. And I, personally, would like it better if they did know.

I directed a movie Wendie Malick agreed to star in (which was compliment enough), and one day at work she turned to me and said, "You're very good at this." And repeated it when we were saying goodbye after wrap.
What's a compliment you'll never forget?
What's an insult you'll never forget?

On the last day of a day camp I attended as a kid, one of the boys brought a bouquet of flowers for all 3 of the other girl campers and the lady counselor but not me.

"Americans don't trust the press. To fix that, we are going to crush important, well-researched pieces until we get an interview with the most Gestapo-looking man you've ever seen lying directly to your faces about torture prisons."
Bari Weiss just sent this Christmas Eve email to the CBS News staff about "building trust," which includes her tripling down on spiking the CECOT piece "to make sure it's comprehensive and fair."

One CBS staffer tells me: "She really has no idea how insulting she comes across."

“boots” is one of the most tragic casualties here - a beautiful, big hearted show about being human in the lion’s den of conformity. some people hate “boots” because it’s about a gay man, but i suspect it is because it shows a humanity they themselves lack.

Here's a higher quality rip of the 60 MINUTES CECOT report.
60 minutes CECOT segment. Recorded through my browser. HD quality. Not phone. Spread it around. If you're press, it's yours. Go nuts.

It's streaming on a Canadian website, but there is no telling for how long.

Until we have the resources for a city-wide water strategy, we need bottled water for the growing numbers of homeless people who are ending up in the ER from heat-related illness.

You either pay for bottled water or ER costs, Holyday.
Councillor Stephen Holyday has a motion to eliminate a $50,000-a-year program to give bottled water to homeless people.
