Been a real up and down day... A lovely piece of good news followed by two disappointing rejections, one big (grant), one small (development program), then a Blue Jays win and a some points on the board for my Movies Fantasy League choices (owing to the Gotham nominations announcement).

If you've got Prime Video, you can watch FROM during the month of October without having to subscribe to the MGM+ add-on. I directed episodes 7 and 8 of Season 1, and they're really good, for which I take only the credit I am due because everyone who works on the show is exceptional at what they do.

Venture-capital firms are giving less money to female entrepreneurs than a decade ago. Why do you think things seem to have moved backward? I’ll tell you something that I have observed. I’ll have a young woman founder who comes to me, and they don’t just have an excellent deck or an excellent pitch. They have real numbers. They have sales. They have something to show for themselves. And they just can’t get anyone to take a meeting with them. And then a young male founder will come to me, and they’ll be like, “Oh, I just secured $13 million on this valuation.” I’m like, really? Let me see the product. Let me see what you’ve done. “Oh, no, it’s an idea.” How did you get $13 million? So, I am shocked by how little we’ve moved forward.

The new USPS stamp sheets Chris Ware designed are very nice and available to order online, along with magnet and jigsaw puzzle versions if you so desire. (My local outlet did not carry the stamps, but there are some that may.)

I'd seen ASH IS PUREST WHITE before, likely the only movie in this collection whose central character is a woman, and it's a veritable epic. Zhao Tao's performance is a tour-de-force, as a gangster's girl who goes to prison for him for 5 years and has to find her way in the changing eras of China.

I'm shooting on an old Canon A-1 with a 50mm lens I acquired from @gregpak.net (Thanks, Greg!), and the film used for all these photos (except for the Paris nighttime shot, which is Cinestill 800) is Kodak Portra 400.

It was fun to witness the folks at REVIVAL take a victory lap for the 1st season of their show with a panel & signing, & what better way to reconnect with an acquaintance I hadn't seen in 2 years by asking for their autograph...Andy McQueen's nothing if not a star. ;) Watch REVIVAL on Syfy/Peacock!

I got to meet longtime social media mutual @danielkibblesmith.com, who is currently writing RICK & MORTY for Oni, but I brought with me the delightful one-shot ARCHIE MEETS RIVERDALE he did with Pat and Tim Kennedy. We had a laugh over it being "healthy" to be out & about in this very chaotic place.

I stopped by @madcavestudios.com to say hello to @manruss.bsky.social & the main artist, @ohyesverynice.bsky.social, on their current existential horror anthology series VANISHING POINT. I've enjoyed the first couple of issues including this particular story featuring a Jetsons-type nuclear family.

I was keen to pick up Mimi Pond's new book DO ADMIT! THE MITFORD SISTERS AND ME from @dandq.bsky.social. Pond's semi-autobio comics are favourites of mine, & the most fun fact is that she wrote the 1st ep of THE SIMPSONS. She drew a very nice dedication & gave me a temp tattoo that says Lyin' Whore.

Emil Ferris & Daniel Clowes each signed one of their masterworks for me at @fantagraphics.bsky.social. MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS remains a staggering achievement, and PATIENCE's time travel structure only gave the journeys of Clowes' trademark emotionally prickly characters more resonance.

8 hrs in the sensory overload of #SDCC once every year or two seems about right for me (this was my 2nd visit), & since I've fallen down on posting about comics I like since leaving Twitter, some nice moments from a Friday spent at Comic-Con as a diversion from sitting in despair.

One of my Paris comic finds was a couple of books from the Yoko Tsuno adventure series known to French youth in the '70s/'80s, created by Roger Leloup. The character is a Japanese electrical engineer and the series is tonally quite grounded (even when it goes full science fiction, to an extent).
