The trouble with the UCP's dual practice model?

Think about a double double.

If the line at Tim’s is long because there’s only one person pouring coffee, opening an “express lane” for people who tip $20 doesn’t speed things up. It means those with more money get the coffee while others wait.
Back in school, I wrote an essay about how two-tier healthcare would improve access for everyone.

It makes intuitive sense: create a second line and the original one gets shorter, right?

A better look at the evidence and arguments like Picard's changed my mind. 🧵
Picard’s point on AB’s new “dual practice” plan: evidence shows letting surgeons bill public & private won’t fix wait times, it likely lengthens them, drains staff from public hospitals, adds red tape, and undermines access.

If you're constantly immersing yourself in the worst parts of humanity without any kind of respite or pleasant experiences or any sort of break, and everything in your life revolves around terribleness, it fucks you up. It fucks you up hard, it fucks you up bad, and it fucks you up in lasting ways.

It’s always viewed as a sort of unearned gift from the state but what’s the alternative – unemployed people steal food? Do crimes for money? Get sick?

Around 70% of the U.S. economy depends on consumer spending. As wealth concentrates in the richest 10%, the rest of America can’t afford to buy enough to keep the economy running.

This is a huge problem — and even America’s most powerful CEOs are starting to sound the alarm.
Our Economy Is in Danger. Here’s Why

speaking as a virginia beach native if these kind of dudes are plotting against ICE then there is wide runway in public opinion for straight up abolishing the agency under a dem presidency

Virginia Beach assistant principal John Bennett and Mark Bennett charged for conspiring threats against police and ICE agents. Both are held without bond.

the “everything is the politic of aesthetic” theory seemed stupid to me in 2015 but it seems to be the only explanation for the trump-change groups’ behaviour
No no, see, now Trump's saying that his and Mamdani's ideas are the same, which of course is based.

Folks will talk about universal basic income, free public transit, and unrestricted public welfare systems like "just because it worked in a tiny town doesn't mean it can work in big cities" as if we don't have decades of studies showing that it actually works there too. There too. Yup, and there. 🙄

I think the heart of what Kate strikes at here is that a reevaluation of what a transgender woman *can* actually do in Congress is in order. Making the president female doesn’t fix the office. Making the representative transgender doesn’t fix the federal government. These systems are busted
For my newsletter today, I wrote about why I've changed my mind about Sarah McBride. (I still find plenty to disagree with) www.burnsnotice.com/revaluating-...

"Gross domestic product (GDP) was never designed to be a measure of societal well-being. It tracks only market transactions, conflates costs and benefits, and ignores the distribution of income, household labor, and social and environmental costs and benefits."

Beyond growth — why we need to agree on an alternative to GDP now
The world needs to move towards an approach to measure well-being rather than economic growth. Here’s how that can happen.

so basically, nvidia is selling more chips that ever to ai companies for “computing power” (ie plagiarism+weird porn), and these companies pay for this by selling shares of their company to nvidia, and this is the only thing keeping the economy afloat?

Oh yay, a new problem caused by LLMs.
Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.
