I just want to say that it's rare for a game to capture my interest as firmly as Helldivers 2. The developers just made so many fantastic decisions. It's just fun!

Super Mario Bros had like 3 or 4 mechanics, and rather than introducing new mechanics each level, it taught you all four and then found consistently new ways to combine them.
Just because you can make it work doesn't mean it's polished enough to ship.

One important design skill for designers to master is to understand the difference in psychology when players die what they consider ‘a worthy death’ vs one where they die to - and this is a technical game design term - ‘fucking bullshit’.
