A truly glorious review of a truly mediocre restaurant. "She lit the drink. The steel wool pulsed with a warm, luxurious shimmer before almost immediately fizzling into a cold pile (yes, this is a metaphor). The drink tasted like a Cosmo someone had strained through a French Vanilla Yankee Candle."

Fun read!
this 1927 story about citrus hybrids is nuts. one, it tells of the birth of the tangelo, which seems incredibly old-world and fussy and for which I am grateful today, and also it casually mentions the passing of the entire lime market, because saloons are outlawed.

Tried a Chamberyzette martini tonight. Very pretty. I ended up at 2 oz Hendricks, 3/4 Chamberyzette and 4 drops lavender bitters. I think it wanted a lemon twist most, but I didn't have that, so experimented with lime and orange which were both good.

Finally got to do a side-by-side I've been waiting for. In Jan 2024 I went to visit the Dolin vermouth factory in Chambery. We got an awesome tour from the president of the company. They weren't set up to do tastings, so they told us we could each take away a bottle. 1/

I know you're supposed to have pizza in New Haven, but there's a place right around the corner for my hotel called Hot Murga, which is Nashville hot chicken meets Indian food, and how can I resist that combo?

Whale oil margarine?!? More fun Canadian margarine facts in the thread.
The Newfoundland Butter Company made margarine from whale, seal and fish oil. That margarine was then smuggled into Canada where it was sold for half the price of butter.
The company was established by Sir John Crosbie, the Minister of Fisheries in Newfoundland.

Here's a little follow up to my tasting episode with Keith Waldbauer. Keith was busy working by that point, so my guest was @cocktailchron.bsky.social, who I'd tasted gin with earlier that same day. We had fun comparing Grandma's tiny bottle of 80s Courvoisier VS with a modern VSOP.

Okay, I said this year's turkey fat washed bourbon was fascinatingly different. The last time I made this, I did it using turkey fat that I'd got purely from rendering the skin. This time I used the turkey fat leftover from roasting a spatchcocked turkey over onion, celery, carrot, sage & thyme. 1/

The answer was Meletti. Nonino was too sweet. Meletti has some major overlap with Montenegro so, that's the one he went for. The Ramazzotti started well but had a weird finish, maybe because it's a very old bottle. The Lucano was just wrong with port. "Too alpine" he said, and I agreed.
My partner's fave aperitivo is 50/50 tawny port & Montenegro. But as I've noted previously, I moved my 48 most critical bottles to Canada. So I have neither of those here. But I did buy a bottle of ruby port to test a recipe, so I gave him four options to try. Which one do you think he chose?

YouTube tells me that none of you have yet spent just under 3 minutes watching this video about my turkey fat washing experiment. So I'm going to repost it so you have a chance before I talk about this year's version, which has just come out of the freezer and is fascinatingly different.
Okay, just spent way too long reminding myself of why I pay someone to edit my videos, but here's a trimmed down version of an ancient Facebook live video where I made the turkey fat washed Wild Turkey Turkey & Sage cocktail, in case you want to know what that's like!

When I moved 48 bottles from my bar in Cambridge to Toronto for the year, it left some holes. Some of which I discovered tonight when I wanted to make margaritas to go with fajitas. Engage Mr Potato Head mode! Mezcal, grapefruit liqueur, and a dash of orange bitters was in the right neighborhood!
