Great article. Apparently the musician was hesitant to let them use his song until he saw the dailies, but I bought Jose Gonzalez' album after seeing this commercial, so I think it worked out for him, as I can't have been the only one.
“I think our bill was $74,000 on broken windows,” said Ranahan. “And the crazy thing is, everyone loved it. The people, the neighborhood, they still come out to me and talk to me about it.”

I’ve often called this song—“Just Like Heaven”—the finest single of the 80s and meant it. This cover’s arrangement only confirms it for me 💜🔥

Ha! Love these AI-suggested responses in YouTube to @bill-n1vux.bsky.social 's comments on the YouTube video for this episode. Want to know why we're talking about couches in a tasting video? Watch the video or read the transcript. Leave a comment and I'll post what it suggested I respond!

It's a daiquiri kind of day. Made with sugar, not simple, which really does make a delightful difference.

Very fun long read here. "New checkers are advised that you can’t trust books—they tend not to be fact-checked." "The longer you check, the more you doubt what you think you know." Researching tiny bottles and cocktail classes, I can totally relate! archive.is/RFTyo

Such a fun tasting episode! We start with a very, let's say, "interesting" bottle of 1970s vodka, then move on to some 80s Courvoisier. Click the link to watch the video or read the transcript (or look for My Tiny Bottles on your favorite podcasting app!)
Tasting Video #51 | my tiny bottles

The fact that this is what passed for children's TV in Canada in the 70s really must explain something about my generation.

When I'm researching brands for My Tiny Bottles I see lots of vintage holiday promos and items. Nice quick look at the history of that trend.

The nice thing about a lunchtime wine event is that I have time to sober up before bed. But now it's 7:30 and a hangover headache...
More wines have arrived, so here's a close up of the selection.

Really excellent bit of writing from @jacobgrier.bsky.social . Maybe it's the too much wine I drank this afternoon, but it actually gave me a bit of hope.
It's always a delight to write for @theunpopulist.net, which consistently publishes some of the smartest public intellectuals around, as well as articles by me like "Superman is cool" and "I dressed up in an inflatable dog costume."
More people need to know the name @jacobgrier.bsky.social. This, in @theunpopulist.net, is absolute gold.

I don't believe this ever touched a barrel, despite what the label says. And it's so smooth I'm not sure I believe it's 40% either. But you can sure taste the Mayan corn on this moonshine. Yum.

When it comes to researching tiny bottles, number of tabs is often inversely proportionate to how long the episode will be. I'm researching a bottle of Bermudez rum right now, and I've got 62 tabs open, looking for a story hook, and the finished episode is only 550 words long!

Sherry is wine. And it's delicious!
I think that sherry's major hurdle is to get people to recognise THAT IT IS WINE. Not...oh we have some wines and also sherry. I realise fortification is an "issue" but finos and manzanillas are only 15% (and becoming less) while many whites these days clock in at about 13.5...not a big difference.

9.5 hours later and I finally have my Martini. 4:1 St George Terroir, Dolin Dry, Regan's orange, lemon twist. Much smaller than Tim's giant 4oz spec, cause I also tested his claim that one could not tell the difference between Negronis made with gin & vodka. I could, but it was closer than expected!
Made the mistake of listening to the last episode of @vinepair.com 's Cocktail College podcast this morning. It's a love letter to the Martini and now it's 9 am and I really want one.
