Humans for me, AI for thee …
Always look to see what the tech bros want for their own kids: small class sizes with human teachers, human tutors with expert content knowledge, cell phone restrictions in classrooms, high per pupil spending, the arts and humanities--and much more they say is too costly for public schools.
The tech world is pushing AI into everything and telling us it's both the way of the future and inevitable. Meanwhile, in the tech world:

well the thing is, the story progressives tell young men is less appealing than ‘your problems are women’s fault and you should manipulate them to get back what they’ve taken from you.’ so. now what
If progressives want to win back young men, then they must talk to them and address their needs, instead of constant scolding. All the finger wagging just drives them to Rogan, Peterson, and the Tate brothers. And they DO talk to young men.

5. Sucking on the ballpoint
6. Scribbling on the notebook some more
7. Throwing it across the room

There are critics of DEI who point to its historic use as a way to capture the rhetoric of social justice movements and mitigate the transformative potential of anti discrimination law, and then there are critics of DEI who think race and sex discrimination is good.
do i roll my eyes at a lot of DEI stuff? yeah, i wrote a whole essay about why i thought it was bullshit back in 2020. but trump et al aren’t saying, “corporate DEI policies mainly exist to protect corporate interests from discrimination lawsuits.” they’re saying “get the blacks out”

the fucking enforcement arm of the federal government is launching a war on integration an effort to push tens of millions of americans to the bottom of an arbitrary hierarchy of value and yeah, it pisses me off to see nominal allies say “oh yeah maybe they have a point”

He's not qualified for this job (I feel like I'm going insane on that point) but even if he was, this kind of stuff should be disqualifying.

Pete Hegseth waxing poetic about hiring and promoting based on "merit" is ... something.

The rage I feel watching him be taken seriously despite being WHOLLY unqualified for the job he's seeking is hard to describe.

Happy New Year! We're 9 days in and it's already been a lot. As the curse goes, "May you live in interesting times." Indeed.

I have my plans for the year, but I wanted to put out something that is more about the attitude and energy I'm bringing to 2025.

The idea that content mods in TX are inherently less biased than content mods in CA is patently absurd. But has anyone noticed that salaries in TX -- even in high COL areas like Austin -- are lower than they are in :: checks notes :: SF BAY?!?

A fun fact about congestion pricing for the haters is that you only get charged one $9 toll to enter the congestion zone per day, no matter how many times you come in or out. It's $6 to ride the subway twice. You're spending three extra dollars.

In seriousness I hope that in 2025 we can see a revival of a feminism worth the name—one committed to the eradication of rape, sexual harassment, abortion bans, domestic violence, femicide, and all the other violence and indignity imposed on women because they are women.

my armchair psychological diagnosis is that the drive to accumulate as much wealth as possible eats away at the drive for self-improvement or the internal desire to cultivate any skills or tastes. these people build huge mounds of treasure and then essentially just sit around looking at it, empty.
find it genuinely delighting that people with enough money to never work again (and do literally anything they want anywhere in the world at any time) seemingly have nothing going on in their lives and are so miserable they are just spending the holidays frantically posting

The idea that we just watched “what was on” is mind blowing to them.
Tried explaining "tv" as I knew it growing up to my teenagers, and how if you missed a show THAT WAS IT, YOU NEVER SAW IT AGAIN (unless you got lucky and caught a re-run that was aired over the summer). Kids were skeptical/horrified

we're hitting new years resolutions and I have a few percolating, but the thing that really strikes me across them is how much I want LESS. I want fewer inputs, and to do fewer things but to do them well and deeply. Wanting LESS in a culture that constantly pressures us to desire more feels wild.
