On 24 June 2025, a significant landslide destroyed the Houzihé Grand Bridge on the Xiarong Expressway in Guizhou, China. A truck driver had an extremely lucky escape when his vehicle was left dangling into the void.

The tragic landslide in Blatten gives me the excuse to tell you the story of how we found out Ice Ages existed. It's a cool story and the most important bit is rather similar to what's happening now.

Our new study out in G-cubed, wrapping up 8 years of repeat seafloor mapping, flow monitoring, and sediment coring in a glacierized fjord. We made some interesting discoveries about how glaciers, turbidity currents, and submarine landslides interact in these dynamic environments

I have now posted my provisional analysis of fatal landslides in 2024 on my blog. In total, 708 fatal landslides (excluding those triggered by an earthquake), cost 4,492 lives. This is far higher than in any previous year for which I have data.

The Naples #tsunami struck the Tyrrhenian Sea on Nov 25, 1343. Triggered by an #earthquake - or a potential #landslide at Stromboli volcano - it caused significant damage and loss of lives in Naples. The tsunami destroyed ships in Naples and the coast and city of Amalfi. 🧪⚒️

The Guardian has a great article about the acceleration in thaw-slide activity on Qikiqtaruk in the high latitudes of Canada,and their impact on the ecology and on communities. These landslides are very visible on Google Earth, as the image below shows.
