Exploring Mass Spectrometry & the Origins of Life: Is Life a Common Cosmic Phenomenon?
Reposted by Maz
This is part of the reason that I’m working on a fully open-source MS instrument. It’s targeted for atmospheric monitoring rather than proteomics, but it’s a step toward making MS hardware much more accessible. Hoping to have it ready to unveil at ASMS 2026.

Hey @asms.org peeps. I’m running for VP for programs and I’d like your vote. Check out the asms web site for details and you will see an email with voting instructions in the near future. I approach this position with lots of experience organizing scientific conferences & I ❤️ asms. Please re-sky.

The history of science is filled with examples of serious consequences for those who chose to compromise integrity. Your peers are always watching, scrutinizing your methods, your data, and your conclusions. That level of accountability is part of what keeps the system honest.

Congrats to those on this list, and it's great to see that, instead of the usual nominations process, original ideas and compelling arguments evaluated blindly by an expert panel were selected, resulting in new faces on the list rather than the usual ones.

“…creates pressure on researchers to produce impressive results”
I think this is key. Is there not pressure to produce impressive results for private funding too?

With decreasing NIH funding, one could argue that scientists are at their most vulnerable, and that might compromise their integrity.

COI issues keep surfacing with every sponsored paper published. Hard to tell when this will stop or if truly independent, unsponsored research is going to disappear altogether.
There have been suggestions that conflicts of interest should be clearly displayed by speakers at all times.
I've got a leak from a factory that is preparing for #ASMS2026 and they've shared their new conflict of interest outfits for the presenters. (I think @benneely.com had this idea?)
Thoughts?

Not even a single scientist in the team to catch this. Horrible.
Trump claimed the Biden administration spent $8 million "making mice transgender." The White House tried to back up this number with records of funding for research into cancer, asthma, and HIV, some of which used *transgenic* (genetically modified) mice.

Dear Science friends:

A coordinated effort across science & academia is appropriate in response to the fascist moves against science funding and DEIJ by the current administration.

It should be effective and broadly supported.

What are your ideas for action?

Elon Musk slashed 6,000 jobs at Twitter and thinks a similar approach could “reshape” the federal government, which has 2.25 million employees (375X). But scaling laws don’t work like that. He knows(?) Falcon 9 → Starship or toy car → Tesla weren’t just “make it bigger.”
