An underrated skill I appreciate a lot is anyone in a fast-paced service industry. You just remember the whole tables’ order? You carry a platter with 10 glasses across a busy diner? You make 6 complex lattes simultaneously? I literally drove halfway down the street in my slippers last week
it's not that i ever doubted that being a barista was a skilled position, but my year-long effort to try to produce a half-decent latte at home has convinced me that a good barista is easily more skilled than virtually every c-suite executive on the planet

As a formally trained, but admittedly not very good, classicist, I feel a certain way about a man with endless time and resources to learn, justifying his macho worldview by saying “it’s better to listen to oral epic poetry in English at 1.25x speed than to read it,” and “they fight over princesses”

"No one's feelings are wrong." When thinkpieces drop accusing Democrats of not believing in anything, this is what they mean. You pay lip service to the existential crisis, but from the outside, it seems like each new step toward authoritarian hell is just another day at the office for you all.

I’m so critical of this because I’m a white man who places a lot of value in thoughtfully arriving at conclusions, so I see the evil in me. I’m begging you all, don’t ever cancel me, I don’t want to turn to the dark side. Chuck me down whatever big tube that was in the Death Star if it happens.
It’s a cliche at this point. Utterly inevitable for a Certain Type of Person (self-proclaimed “rationalist,” usually white, usually male, conventionally successful and unable to cope with the mere idea of losing a foothold in popular culture)

I hope the future dissection of the US’s descent into authoritarianism gives due space to spectacularly fragile egotists being unable to hack it on social media.

To repeat: I have studied a lot of cases of autocratization over the past 15 years. Wrote about them, taught about them, consulting about them.
I do not recall an opposition so apathetic, ignorant, and inept as the @democrats.org. They cling to their power, rather than fight for democracy. Shame.
