In light of record submission rates and a large volume of AI-generated slop, SocArXiv recently implemented a policy requiring ORCIDs linked in the OSF profile of submitting authors, and narrowing our focus to social science subjects. Today we are taking two more steps:

Journal X: 2 reviews are in for your submitted manuscript
Review 1: Major Revisions
Review 2: Minor Revisions

Editors: unfortunately, we have to reject your manuscript

Getting under review and publishing is already tough, IMO but why making it even more challenging...

A tiny minority of highly active users produce the majority of online political content, while most users consume content passively and remain largely silent.

Toxic comments are more likely to be expressed, even though most people disagree with them, creating false norms.

Recently did around 30 requests to ppl who'd published very similar papers to the one I needed reviews for. 3 declines, 25 no response. Please at least decline guys it slows stuff down so much otherwise.
I'm still relatively new to this journal associate editor business, but it already sucks… I've had a paper on my desk for more than a month now:

Reviewers invited: 12
Of those…

I summarize key findings from a study with @anninahermes.bsky.social across 57 democracies

„[Fantasy] sublimates a dread of being determined by society’s impersonal structures and a wish for our own choices and values to shape the world around us. It reflects a desire for control, power, and a transparent mechanism from individual choice to social effect.“
Why is the right so fascinated with fantasy literature?
Society inevitably structures our choices but the resulting frustration feeds a yearning for magical rings

🧵(1/5) www.diw.de/de/diw_01.c....

Thank you for sharing this and for the helpful recommendations👏 I would add that the rejection context matters.
When one faces the end of a fixed-term contract while project proposals and manuscripts are also being rejected, “failing better” can be an especially difficult part of an academic career.
Every academic career is built on rejection, but we don’t show it.

CVs list publications, grants & awards, not rejected manuscripts, unfunded proposals, or failures.

But those invisible rejections shape us more than our successes ever do.
