I'm here because the billionaires aren't. I write code, make user interfaces, drink coffee, read, and try to make things a little better for people.

An easy way to explain luddites:

Textile manufacturers brought in machines that could do in an hour what would have taken 12 hours by hand.

And then, tried to keep paying the now 12x more productive workers the same wages as before.

That's it, that was the problem luddites had. Not complex.

I've been coding my ass off for the past month or so. Spending every free waking moment in front of my laptop writing thousands of lines of features and improvements for our startup's web app. I've started to wonder why I'm more motivated now than I've ever been in 20-some years of doing this. Write code to make being human easier. Rip code out if it makes being human harder. Write code to make caring for each other easier. Rip it out if it makes caring for each other harder.

Empathy driven development has literally never failed me. It’s done me better than everything else combined

I will say this--from the banking houses of the Renaissance to the entertainment megacorporations of today, when a large money-making enterprise underwrites great art, it's usually by accident. We shouldn't be surprised when the people at the top turn into the bad guys of their own stories.

Anyone else noticed that the pronunciation of "Mario Bros." has shifted entirely from "Mario brothers" to "Mario *bros*"?

And no, this isn't a Mandela Effect thing – look at a few old ads, or note the Japanese name of the 1985 game: スーパーマリオブラザーズ, pronounced roughly "suupaa mario burazaazu"

lol, I can't see the ground-to-aircraft part of this conversation, but I feel like there is a 95% chance this is about the rocket launch from Wallops that just happened

I said I'd stop posting GLP-1 updates, but right now I'm just happy to have something to be happy about. I just got new bloodwork, and my lipids, liver enzymes and cardiovascular risk have all continued to improve, nearly all into the normal range. Still feels like magic. I'm so grateful.

The #1 thing that blows my mind about how most people use LLMs: they believe if they ask the LLM a question about how it works or how accurate it is, the LLM will truthfully answer them.

I have seen SO many seemingly-smart people do this.
i don't think it helps that the llms constantly lie to the user about the capabilities of llms as part of its whole obsequious fawning style of interaction that oversells its abilities and obscures its obvious limitations by fundamentally misrepresenting how the technology works

It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday
The unholy thing shambles in
He’s too big for the chair sitting next to me
And he makes an unbearable din

Sing us a song, you’re the piano man
Your skin is a wooden facade
You’ve brass pedals for hands
And your hair’s copper strands
Give unbearable insult to god
