MY WARRIORS! THERE'S A LOT OF STUFF GOING AROUND TELLING PEOPLE TO KNEEL IN FRONT OF COPS AT PROTESTS AND TO POUR MILK IN YOUR EYES FOR TEAR GAS. PLEASE DO NOT DO EITHER OF THOSE THINGS. PLEASE DO NOT SPREAD MESSAGES TELLING PEOPLE TO DO THOSE THINGS.

"I picked a pretty rough time to actually want to be alive."

The whole thing (waves arms frantically). Please just do yourself and your heart a favor and read it.
This is one of the most profound essays I’ve read in years. You don’t need me to tell you that Hanif Abdurraqib is one of the finest writers of our time, but this essay in particular is a hard-won offering. Please read it and share with people you love.
In Defense of Despair
The feeling is most commonly framed as an end point, a level of despondency that cannot be overcome. But it doesn’t have to be so.

Don't mess with this. 'Tis extremely gnarly.

I just got over it. It knocked me flat for more than a week and I'm still tired. I haven't been this sick in probably 15 years. I'm a rigorous masker because of Covid, but apparently got lax in the clean hands department.

Get vaccinated and stay safe.
There's a lot of flu circulating. Get vaccinated if you haven't. Wear a mask. Wash your hands and if you get sick try and get tamiflu
More proof that what's happening here in Philly is happening elsewhere. Check out Hamilton County, Ohio where EMS is seeing record calls.

This reframing fits nicely with my life goal of becoming Cantankerous Mister Rogers.

Basically I want to be like if Mister Rogers sounded like George Carlin.
This is a great thread, but what struck me about it is that my grandmother had a term for what's being described here. She called it, "being neighborly," and it was just par for the course in the small town where she lived for most of her life. "Mutual aid" sounds academic, but "neighborly" doesn't.
I think a lot of people have mutual aid confused with charity on here, maybe because folks most often see it in the context of fundraiser asks (which are great!).

I want to talk a little about what it looks like in everyday life.

Because we need it more than ever. Government is getting shredded.

'Even Tang Goes Stale Eventually' would be an amazing title for a practical prepping guide.

And the advice here is solid: stock up on stuff you like, that's fresh, and that you can count on when you need it.
One of the mistakes I see the hardcore gun and bunker guys making is they don't use their stash.

Even Tang goes stale eventually. So you've got to drink it before that happens and if you're making a face right now then Tang does not belong in your emergency kit.

A non-alarmist and highly realistic place to start for those new to emergency preparedness and good reminders for the rest of us.

(glances with moderate guilt at the now-expired canned goods I forgot to rotate through in my pantry. oops.)
Now is a good time to get into preparedness, wherever you are. Being individually prepared is a good way to be in a better position to help others.

Your basic goal, to start, is to be ready for three days in your home without power or water and to be able to leave quickly if need be.

This whole thread on evacuation and displacement is great but this "grab the dirty laundry basket instead of packing clean clothes" suggestion is absolutely fucking brilliant.
1. Clothes: Grab your dirty laundry basket. Everything in there fits you, is seasonally correct and you’ve worn recently so you don’t hate it. I packed like I was going camping in my panic. Multiple sweatshirts when it was 96° outside.

Weather events aside, this is true of much "breaking news." It's hard to remember but worth remembering.
a good test for “is this useful disaster related content” is “does this feel more like boring nerd shit or like a summer movie”

the boring nerd shit (see comprehensive plan & house fire preparedness checklist above) is the useful stuff, the summer movie content is entertainment

Just found the last place I lived in Sacramento (2005) available for rent. It's $1195 now. It was $400 then ($631 adjusted for inflation).

Lesson from the 2017 Calif fire season: when outside, cover up as much skin as possible and shake off your clothes before you go back in. The particulate (ash) can be irritating. At the very least shake it out of your eyebrows and hair (lean forward to keep it out of your eyes) and wash your face.
Additional pro-tip:
Unlike with N95s for infection control, you cannot re-use them in rotation or over several days. You wanna throw them away when they get dirty, which will happen fast (same dayish) with smoke and particulates. Plus, they’ll stink. Guarantee it.
Pro tip from someone who used to cover fires all the time: N95s and KN95s (and other masks) will protect against the particulate matter that will otherwise potentially get into your throat, lungs, and bloodstream and make you feel like total shit.

Recognize when they're lacking resources (context, information, skill, ability, time, etc) and then asking for help from someone who can either help them directly or who can guide them toward someone who can.

Related: receiving and offering help in a non-judgmental, non-apologetic, shame-free way.
