Well, this is shocking—apparently in the US many kids are being taught to “read” by guessing words based on things like the picture. I wonder if this bonkers theory has made it to other countries, or if it remains a largely US phenomenon

How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't kno...

A standing ovation — from Liberals too — for Charlie Kirk in the Canadian House of Commons.

You can (and should) oppose political violence without doing all this, you know.

Smaug dies though
Peter Thiel is founding yet another company named after something from Middle Earth.

This time it’s a bank named Erebor, a reference to the mountain which holds Smaug’s piles of gold and treasure.

Wait. Two congressmen died and now their districts just have no representation?? Every time I learn something new about US democracy, it’s never good
Won by a two vote margin. Interestingly, two democratic seats are currently empty because their members died in office.
After getting "assurances" from Republican leaders that there would be enormous cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, House Republican holdouts flipped to back the Senate budget resolution, which just passed. Republican nays are Massie and Spartz.

IMO, pretending that such language doesn't exist, or that rules aren't there to facilitate communication, actually hurts more than it helps. It leads people to believe that style is only for the chosen few. In fact, style—like any language—can be learned.

I recently saw someone on here say that such fashion "rules" are pretentious. But when I looked at their photos, they were dressed in a very clear subcultural language that communicated their identity—young, hip, countercultural. They, too, were using language governed by "rules."

Did you know that you should end your alt text with a period?

"End alt text with a period, even if it isn’t a full sentence. The period ensures that the screen reader pauses after reading the alt text."

This was a new tip for me. Glad to learn something new!

There’s this app called ‘The Fabulous’ that specifically targets people with #ADHD and tries to trick them into a paid subscription. They aren’t the only ones doing this, but they are the most predatory that I’ve seen

The IG ad I was served makes it seem like they are running a clinical trial (1/7)

It seems that Wes Streeting is going to make the Puberty Blockers ban for trans children permanent.

Consider writing to your MPs about it. This is what our chair has sent his.
I do not know if this will have any impact, but I have got to put my anger towards something practical so this is what I have written to my MP

Feel free to copy (check alt text) and improve.

So, this is a joke but I am South African by birth and I’ve always said that Afrikaans parents are the absolute WORST at naming their kids. I don’t think people get it when I tell them this though, so this post makes me feel so seen
