British journalists are always like "I only had 4 annual european holidays growing up, because my father, the Baron, was a bit of a cheapskate, so really I am working class" then 5 minutes later decree an actual working class person a faker because they drink coffee

Weirdly, people r gleefully pointing to Seamus Culleton's mistakes as a young man in Ireland as 'proof' that ICE should be locking him up and deporting him.

This guy had to go to the States in 2009. After the banking crisis torpedoed the sector in Ireland. Soon forgotten or never mattered to some

In the past few years I've been drawn to the work of Jia Pingwa, who writes about the small villages in the mountains around Shaanxi. He's a major writer imo but for whatever reason hasn't broken through. This is an unpretentious documentary about where he grew up.

#speirgorm does anyone know how to make a formal complaint about the lack of balance in this? RTE's formal complaints process doesn't seem to me to cover the website, only "broadcast material". Or am I wrong about that?

Anyone who like Wim Wenders says that film should stay out of politics doesn’t understand politics. To ‘stay out of politics’ is to take a political position. It’s to be in politics. This is the sociopolitical equivalent of Russell’s Antinomy in set theory, since by saying one is not involved one is

Why was she on at all? Some random woman is all she is. She holds no public position, doesn't seem to be involved in any community or similar organisations, has never held an elected position or even run for one. The only time she tried she couldn't get nominated.
Maria Steen was on RTÉ Radio 1, the country’s most listened to radio station, this morning lamenting the lack of conservative voices in our national media.

She then read from an article by Brenda Power, published in the most widely read national newspaper.

I salute the way Connolly station is determined to make waiting for the train as unpleasant as possible. 8 seats up a set of stairs with broken lift is clearly enough for people not driving to the west.

This fucking woman and her cronies, gatekeeping what they see as 'essential' womanhood based on some notion that all of 6 of them share.

I swear losing the empire has sent some English people off finding new realms they can oppress and attack people in for status points.
Hillary Cass both sides-ing the “trans debate” dismisses the material power imbalance

- One side is pushing for restrictions, removal of care, & the eradication of trans kids
- The other is pushing for access to care and legal protections

Those are not symmetrical in terms of power or impact

They’re out in all weathers restoring the canal - we want to give them the welfare facilities they deserve; somewhere warm, somewhere to make a hot drink, and to wash.

I think “floaty boats murder monster” is how I’m going to refer to all bears from now on
Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon.

Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

We bought Article II of the United Nations Charter with the blood of a hundred million human beings, and less than a century later, it's being sold for nothing by people who don't even understand what they're doing.
i think this is what drives me nuts. people talk about how, say, the UN was founded by "starry eyed idealists" who didn't understand "reality." the truth is that the UN was founded by those who had just fought and *won* the bloodiest war in human history.
