i got solar and an ev at the same time and it feels like moving to a new age in civ. why are we paying so much for power its coming out of the sun in unlimited quantities.
We should be putting a gargantuan amount of money into solar and storage. War economy levels. It should be free to have a guy from the government solar your house up. Electricity should basically cost nothing.

Could a better solution be to fly less...?

Why are politicians so blinkered when it comes to aviation? It is THE MOST polluting form of transport. Everything we're doing for the climate is pretty much pointless if we're not also addressing flying.

And not flying doesn't mean you can't still go where you want to go! 👇👇

Seriously though, this could be a genuine way to address aviation's climate impact: it doesn't cost anything, it can happen now, and it really does reduce emissions.

The danger is that it's used as a reason to keep flying, or expand the industry. We need to reduce flights AND avoid contrails.

Whatever the industry tells you about 'sustainable' aviation, the reality is that emissions are still rising.

We can't solve it with future technology and so-called 'sustainable' aviation fuel (SAF). We need to fly less.
Two recent grim numbers in the quest to decarbonize air travel: Flights jumped 10% last year (reaching an all-time high), while use of cleaner jet fuel (SAF) missed industry expectations, reaching just 0.3% of all jet fuel.

We break it down here (gift link):

Global Air Travel Surges While Switch to Clean Jet Fuel Lags
To reach 2030 climate targets, airlines will need to increase their consumption of sustainable aviation fuel more than 30-fold.

A comprehensive take-down of SAF by @benpurvis42.bsky.social

- overblown estimates on emissions savings
- same CO2 output when burned
- at worst, could be more carbon-intensive than regular jet fuel
- limited feedstock, often imported
- savings are extinguished by expansion of the industry
There isn’t enough ‘sustainable’ aviation fuel to make a dent in our emissions – and there won’t be for years
It’s better than regular jet fuel, but beware the hype.

Although even hydrogen is not the answer – renewables are better used elsewhere.

If we stop flying, won't it harm those communities that rely on our tourist dollars?

On the other hand, it's typically those same communities that are most vulnerable to climate change. If we carry on flying, aren't we causing more harm?
What about tourism?
We know that air travel facilitates global tourism, and if we were to stop flying, communities who rely on our visits would suffer. But is that the full story?
