The whole “stepping back from public commitments” thing is as much a form of protection for the organizations that had their reputations burnished and networks grown by a powerful but now disgraced man as it is a way for the disgraced man not to have to face more public censure.

A poster for the unmatched Hallmark Channel epic, The 10th Kingdom. As the show was released in 2000, the poster rather sadly depicts the twin World Trade Center towers in NYC. They are reflected in the nearby water as castle spires, hinting that all is perhaps not as it seems in lower Manhattan. Engaging for kids, meaty enough for grown-ups; a perfect encapsulation of the Brothers Grimm.

It's an honor to be called woke. You think you're shaming me? Lol. Ten years ago I would have felt like I was engaging in a sort of appropriation or stolen valor to claim a freedom struggle going back to Leadbelly as my own, but now I can just smile serenely while the worst people on earth seethe.

My most woke opinion is that "woke" at root is a beautiful concept: active socio-political consciousness in the context of the Black American liberation struggle. And the way it's been turned into a sneering pejorative is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen in Western political discourse.
