Populism/Popularisms problem is that if you promise everyone a free pony and deliver on it, the people who voted for it will probably still end up mad at you, because the streets are now covered in horseshit.
but it's not.

Because fundamentally policy is always interpreted through different individual lenses, and in the end the outcomes are completely different from what people imagined.

shit i'm sick of fucking seeing from LLM advocates:

claiming you can't do arithmetic on LLM energy usage per query the same way we routinely calculate per-usage energy consumption on EVERYTHING ELSE THAT USES ELECTRICITY

it's *literally* a handwave they cribbed from bitcoin

don't worry about chatgpt power usage, all those data centres and their power/water usage and restarted power plants to feed the AI bubble don't exist, and i'm totally not being an apologist,

fucksakes, this is literally bitcoiner shit. i mean actual bitcoiner bad excuses with the name changed.

I hope everyone working on LLMs has reckoned with their role in building a technology that, so far, has offered little to no benefit to humanity — while causing real harm by degrading art, undermining labor in creative industries, and straight up automating political propaganda

Also I'm ngl John Paul II was - and this is a spicy take I know - also bad for Eastern Europe specifically. We would have liberated ourselves anyway, but, imo, he infused the Catholic Church at the moment of liberation with a centrality that it had all but lost in previous generations.

Sen. Van Hollen and his meeting with Abrego Garcia in El Salvador is all over the news and social media.

Joe Rogan is talking about the value of due process, wrongly denied to Abrego Garcia.

Thankfully the “just poll, then do what’s already popular, never try to lead or shape opinion” crowd lost.

Political credibility is lost in this process.
(on the bright side, it has always been quite low)

Journalists' first obligation is not to the truth

Journalists' first obligation is not to justice

Journalists' first obligation is to selling copies

And to crib a line from Ronald Wilson Reagan, "if it takes a bloodbath [to sell those copies], so be it"

It was the same implicit threat they used time after time talking about the prosecution against Trump, and given Garland's slow-rolling, it sure seems to have worked

Our press are terrorists in the most literal possible sense of the word

Like, the Economist isn't even trying to say she's not guilty

The message is "yeah, she did it, and you should let her keep doing it, because if you don't we're going to help whip up a crowd of fascist revolutionaries to reject the election and behead Macron on the Champs-Elysees"

At some point there's going to be a serious reckoning over the fact that a large part of the reason for the surge in lawlessness was the Respectable Mainstream Press extorting the authorities into non-enforcement of the law against very obviously guilty rightist criminals basically just For Teh Lulz

One of the odd dynamics here is that the market reaction will probably be muted, as Arieh says, because traders aren't sure this will stick. And yet the muted reaction makes it more likely they'll stick, at least until real damage is done.
Don't be too surprised if markets react only mildly to the tariff insanity. Investors are still disbelieving, still think it might go away. There's still a lot of meme vibes out there. It might take a quarter of real economic data to tell the story.

Big congratulations to all the business leaders who are smarter than the rest of us because they knew Donald Trump didn't mean the stuff he kept saying and already did some of in his first term. Superior ability like that is why they deserve all that they manage to get.
