NZ report card 2025: how the country fared in 28 key global and domestic rankings
New Zealand compares well on global measures of freedom, happiness and transparency. But rankings in some important areas, including climate, drag the averages down.

Here's a piece on our new Marsden project on music in dementia (w/ Lynette Tippett at UoA and @carolynfredericks.bsky.social at Yale)

Having known several people with Alzheimer's, all of whom retained their music perception and musical memory, I'm eager to learn more about these puzzling phenomena
Why people with dementia can be so moved by music
Researchers are looking into why patients can still have a powerful response to music even as their memory fades.

🔥 Our Affiliate Troy Baisden was on RNZ's Mediawatch recently, discussing misinformation about EV's malfunctioning and causing fires. The story was in the context of the Goverment slashing by 80% the clean car standard - which incentivised sales of low- or zero-emission vehicles. 🚗
Mediawatch: Angst over EVs blows up in headlines
EV uptake boomed with incentives in place, but this week, the government made traditional cars cheaper instead.

Min of Health has decided not to continue with the FluTracking survey each week from next year.

What a ridiculous decision. The cost savings must be minimal

What are our taxes actually used for if not things like public health?

BONKERS!

The Luxon Govt’s rewrite of the RMA laws allows companies to claim financial compensation (from taxpayers) when councils introduce rules to limit pollution or protect the environment.

Let that sink in.

Luxon & Seymour's new laws are a trap. Hidden in the fine print: ratepayers must compensate landowners with cash if environmental rules stop them from developing. It’s your hard-earned money going straight to the wealthy. A kick in the guts. #nzpol thespinoff.co.nz/politics/09-...
RIP RMA: Government prays for economic boom with new bills

In 1968 Finland banned for profit education, the few private schools that exist in Finland have to reinvest any profit they make or pay it back to parents.

It has been in the Top 3 in education for the last 20 years.

There should be no profit in education or healthcare.

This is why I mask indoors when sharing air with others, regularly test, use air purifiers, and get a COVID booster every six months, most recently on Monday. Saddens and infuriates me governments and organisations are letting us down despite all the evidence these protections are still needed.
COVID isn’t acting like the viruses most of us grew up with, and treating it like “just a cold” is putting people at real risk. David Brasure breaks down why SARS-CoV-2 is fundamentally different, how it causes long-term damage, and what we can do to protect ourselves.

Worldwide mortality experience since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2024) shows excess deaths over that period in almost every country measured. Australia (+6%) was below average, and New Zealand (+0.1%) the lowest we measured.
