100%

You know what would also save 10 mins on an airport trip? Regular and dependable mass transit like light rail, MRT, etc.

Most of us could fit happily on a flat floor tram (etc) to the front door of the airport, saving a lot of traffic on the road for those who do need to drive
this is so much of right-of-centre politics in NZ, just scolding the left for not caring about real issues like saving 10 minutes on an airport trip. who cares if the standard speed limit will instantly kill any child hit by a car, it might takes 1 minute longer to drive through this school zone
$4 BILLION to save 'up to 10 minutes' during peak traffic. Fucking hell - imagine what that $4B could do for housing, education, health, etc, in Aotearoa.

Today, it's exactly one hundred years since the opening ceremony of the New Zealand & South Seas International Exhibition in Dunedin.

To celebrate, I'm sharing some images from an original copy of the ceremony's official souvenir programme.

Another lovely morning of ringing. We had 12 of us, including a welcome visitor from Melbourne. We rang rounds, Plain Bob Doubles & Triples, and Grandsire Doubles.

Oh yeah, fuck off. It costs you nothing to wear it. "I don't want to wear it for religious reasons" and "I won't wear it to not single out my friend".
Basketball: NZ Breakers won't wear ANBL 'Pride' insignia
The Auckland-based team have opted out of wearing rainbow insignia during the competition's 'Pride Round'.

💕

This is impressive for several reasons. I can't ring full peals anymore, so I'm a little jealous too
…I made this?? I made this!!

(I also conducted the peal!)

Ian (organizer of the peal and ringer of the treble) commissioned it and requested that it include a representation of the cathedral

Ever meet someone and just *know* that (if they have any) their adult children don't speak to them anymore?

At what point do we publicly accept that NZ is deeply corrupt and the only reason why we don’t have a culture of direct payoffs and bribery (that we cite as the evidence for us not being corrupt) is because it’s not needed? The boys club gets what it wants through people playing their social roles.

If the barrel keeps having rotten apples put in, or apples are turning rotten once inside, at what point do you accept there’s a system problem?

Why are rotten apples put in? Why are they going rotten once in?

And why aren’t (more) politicians asking this about police?

Just had to do some unconnecting on LinkedIn. A German-NZ distinguished professor who I think is mates with Dawkins posted some dumb shit ["will the decolonisers have 'won' when we have university students who don't know the basics of maths?!"] and got "applause" from some colleagues.

Dear researchers. PLEASE go and set yourself up with an ORCID id. It makes life so much easier for everyone to make sure you're correctly identified. However, there is no point in doing any of that if you make your profile page hidden, visible only to you. ZOMG. Thanks 💕

Time and time again, it turns out that the thing adults want is lego. Especially cool and well thought out gifts like this.

In a world full of stupid-ass dickhead wannabe dictators, be men gifting lego (esp when there's a cool double connection) 💕
Anyway, we need some joy, so here's the Egyptian foreign minister being given a Lego Pyramid by the Danish foreign minister.

It’s nuts the crap people believe about me. Someone even thinks I leafleted schools to scare boys into getting vaccinated! That may just sound silly, but misinformation and disinformation like this means some people want me and others like me jailed or even dead. It’s heartbreaking.

Oof. Went to renew my Auckland Art Gallery membership, and guest passes have gone up from $30 to $70, saying "yes, well, they were undercharged in the past". Based on my current subscription level, a guest pass costs more than my own pass, so I'll only be renewing for myself this year 🫤
