Glad my graduate alma mater cut 60 degree programs in subjects that require people to think so that they could offer this. Looking forward to living in a world full of Prompt Engineers.

Global average temperature is expected to rise to almost 2C above preindustrial in the next five years, according to the WMO, with falls in crop yields and more than a third of the world’s population being exposed to extreme heat.

People, I'm sorry but we have to deal with this. Later is too late.

Whatever you might hear from fascist billionaires, Mars is extremely dry, extremely cold—and extremely inhospitable.

For the energy, effort, and expense it takes to make Mars habitable for humans we could ensure that Earth is protected, cherished, and able to care for countless generations to come.

In disordered discourse:

Engagement > accuracy
Performance > governance
Emotion > evidence
Identity = target

The logic of the algorithm now structures political speech. It rewards those who dramatise difference and punish deviation from the tribe.

thinking a bit about this story again today
I wrote about the crumbling mythology around Wayne Gretzky — and the sense of betrayal many Canadians feel — due to the Great One’s silence amid President Trump’s repeated calls to annex Canada while forcing a crippling trade war.

The people who want to mine 3He on the moon are space cadets: they need an excuse to go to the moon, so they picked this one.

It's bullshit on stilts. First postulate an advanced reactor tech we're nowhere near building, then source the MOST expensive fuel for it instead of the cheapest.

THEY'RE TALKING COMPLETE BULLSHIT.

Tanya is right on launch and robotics AND yet the parts of Space that we haven't even tried, but so many visions of human spaceflight futures just assume, may not only be "hard" but impossible. Effects of months-long Lunar or Martian radiation and gravity may well be insurmountable barriers 1/*
It's not that space isn't hard anymore, it's that it's *not as hard as it used to be* because NASA has so much experience. But "space is hard" almost gets thrown around as an excuse for failure in recent times, and that's what irks me. (2/2)

Let's debunk this whole "space is hard" mantra.

Looking at all NASA-led missions launched since 2000, only 4 out of ~60 missions experienced total failures.

Two of these were due to issues with the commercial launch vehicle, & two were spacecraft issues.

That is a *93% success rate.* (1/n)

Yup, if threats to our sovereignty escalate we will have more important things to worry about than pointing out how cowardly Canadian TV hockey personalities were in this moment. But right now, we have every reason to call these dorks out for putting the sanctity of a song above those threats.
trump: we are going to conquer canada and make it a state

canadian hockey fans: fine, we will boo your anthem at games

media: these two actions are exactly the same level of bad

Well yeah, wrestling rules.
I've seen national political writers, TV and movie podcasters, and random friends all posting about a hockey game tonight. The fights, silly as they were, blew up on social media. That drew the eyeballs. The intensity and pace of the play held onto them. This is what "growing the game" looks like.

Final thought: Given everything happening between the two countries right now, and what the US president is openly threatening to do, Canadian fans are being extraordinarily reserved and polite if the worst they do is make a disapproving noise at a song.
