This is absolutely true. I worked at a small indie store and if a book that wasn't from a major author sold within a month of being brought in, we would reorder. The margin for success is tiny in small bookstores.
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I keep pointing this out, but I don’t think people actually fathom the catastrophic loss of expertise that occurred from DOGE’s gutting of the federal government. Imagine if every school teacher in America with more than 20 years experience all vanished tomorrow. This is irreparable damage.

It will actually not be possible to accurately calculate the number of people who will die, directly or indirectly, because of the stuff DOGE did in a matter of months. And as such, not a single person will face any repercussions for it. This is one of the most total victories in American history.

Forseeing a time when the judiciary is infested by the same "Rishi Sunak isn't even English" radicalisation that's taken the right, and some people are blindsided because they thought "this trans girl said she was alarmed and distressed, but I don't believe her" was impartial application of the law
To tie back to my comparison to other online radicalisation, even if you don't give a shit about trans people, the judiciary becoming increasingly partial on a specific issue should be seen as the canary in the coal mine giving the current direction of travel in this country
Like it was obvious when the Supreme Court randomly decided to rewrite the Equality Act, but I think there's a large amount if journalistic negligence that no one really treats judges as anything other than neutral conduits through which the word of law moves

Thatcher's government did this with Section 28, banned the "promotion of homosexuality" as a danger to children, while actively protecting Jimmy Savile and who knows how many other pedophiles. It's the same damn playbook.
