I was really confused, so for others: this is about nurse practitioners, which is a postgraduate degree, and thus via this change they can only get 20k and not 50k in loans.

RN's for example are an associates degree, to which this doesn't apply.

So this ensures we can't backfill the need for PCPs.
Q: "Why is nursing being dropped as a professional degree?"

A: "Because 1 in every 20 nurses is Filipino. Because ~40% of the nurses in California are foreign born. Because ~60% of California nurses, are not white."
About 1 in every 20 nurses in the US are Filipino.♥️🇵🇭

The Philippines is better at educating and training large numbers of high quality nurses for less educational cost, than most other nations. Better than the USA.

This isn't just "cheap labor." This is pride in excellence of service to others.

But also, the _reason_ Mamdani could do this is because of the skill set someone like him has to learn being part of our communities. He is able to *perform* the "model minority" role, but is not interested in, and not aspiring to, whiteness. This combination is a hack that breaks media & power.

Reminder that there are other good mail services. My wife and I moved to mailbox.org (hosted in Germany, one of many options). You can set up your old gmail account to delete and forward email to your new account and give people your new address to transition.

Google no longer deserves your trust.
If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Enforced disappearance under international law does not include a temporal element. A disappearance for hours or days is enough to make it impossible to defend someone’s rights and for the government to accomplish unlawful deportations. Don’t shy away from using the accurate term. Trump in a room with a very charismatic person results in like half a day of Trump agreeing with everything that person said, so this has the potential to be very, very funny.

I just bought a $100 windows laptop.

I have an inverter and battery bank. I wanted to upgrade the firmware on the batteries. Everyone is using Wine, so I figured maybe I should try it.

I broke the BMS on one battery, and still need to update the other 4. Cheapest solution? Buy a windows box.

When I was in college researchers were trying to prove that a simple jointed snake could not climb a pole. My friend discovered the motion looking for a cool motion demo. The snake he worked on, an all undergrad project, climbed a pole at a convention where people spoke about why it wasn't possible.

'“The beautiful thing about the Texas Traffic Code is there’s thousands of things you can stop a vehicle for,” said Joel Babb, the sheriff’s deputy...'

Those codes exist as a pretext for harassing black/brown people, and are now for everyone. Maybe we shouldn't (have) let anyone be harassed?
Border Patrol is monitoring millions of Americans' driving patterns in a "predictive intelligence program," and they're arresting people they deem "suspicious." But sure, folks like me are overreacting when we warn about a Trump dictatorship.

Ban automatics and power steering!

But seriously, this is actually the answer. I agree wholeheartedly:

Make driving less pleasant and biking/walking better makes everything better for everyone.

I have a pinephone pro and I'd very much like to switch it or another non-android linux phone eventually. I'd lose features I use, but they are mostly managable if battery life was up to snuff.

But, I just realized a gaping hole... There's no wifi calling and I have no cell signal at home.

100%. Elizabeth Spiers is right.

Aside:
If you ask Black folk that have lived all over this country 🙋🏿‍♂️what the most racist city they've lived in is, the most common winner is Boston.

Ironic, but Black folk can't convince white folk that Black folk understand which city is more racist.🤷🏿‍♂️
If you're talking about me, that is not what I said. The whole thread started bc a bunch of supposed progressives were like fuck the south, buncha racists, and I said that if you think of the south as all MAGA white people you are throwing a lot of people under the bus--especially Black Southerners

those of us laid off from Teen Vogue were really fortunate to complete our fundraising goal — the laid-off staffers at VIBE deserve the same support, as Black media outlets and journalists continue to be targeted and discriminated against in “austerity” measures
It was announced on October 16, 2025 that VIBE was "joining forces" with Rolling Stone. As a result, the majority of VIBE employees were laid off. If you have the means to give, this team could use the support! www.gofundme.com/f/support-vi...

Buttigieg polled an impressive 0% with Black voters. Zero. Percent.

Do you know how kind and friendly Black voters are? Everyone gets like 3%, just for showing up! You have to work to go down from there!

It's 2025, And I still run into people that don't know why Black voters don't like Buttigieg.

"Symptoms usually start within 30 seconds and last about 30 minutes."

Bullshit.

My mom was incidentally in the vicinity of teargassing in college. The next day she asked for extra time on a test because she could barely see to read. Prof let take it later.
Wind, cold temps can change the impact of tear gas and pepper balls, experts say
The chemicals stay closer to the ground and may become less effective, though using tear gas outdoors is questionable practice in any weather.

Now that my health is a more under control, I've joined Indivisible.

I was at a small protest yesterday, a reminder between the bigger actions. I'm going to a peacekeeper training today. I'm not a peacekeeper (yet), but maybe I will be, and either way I'm excited to learn de-escalation skills.

The fact that green energy is now cheaper is literally why.

"moderates" in the U.S. today are just rich people and those they control (directly or indirectly). Every moderate position is what's best for rich people.

Rich people own fossil fuel assets, and green energy will strand those assets.
the astonishing thing about this wave of denialism is that we have more or less decidedly hit the point where clean energy is the *cheaper* option by some distance
I'm kind of baffled how the "moderates" have apparently all decided to turn against climate policy at once, just as China reaches green electrostate liftoff mode. I thought these people were all about National Greatness and making Hard Choices

I believe existing in our society with dark skin involves sufficient existential risk that to perform equivalently to someone with white-skin they must be far better to overcome that constant distraction.

So: a black person with the same metrics as a white person is significantly better.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

That title... just wow. But, realize this article is the setup.

They are telling a story they will tell no matter what.

Ooof, so so true, and yet the line is so fuzzy.

Recently I've been thinking about giving to charity. I am undeniably comfortable. I have shelter, food, clothing, hot and cold running water, but there is future risk as well.

The question "What can I give" is surprisingly fraught when investigated.
there's a difference between living comfortably and living luxuriously and some people don't really seem to understand that.

You cannot read this and still say "But we can't defund the police, who will protect us". Who protects us now? The police were never there for that purpose. Any protecting they do is *literally* incidental to their actual job. Maybe that should be someone's job, but that has nothing to do with cops.
In 1999, a woman named Jessica Gonzales sought and obtained an order of protection against her physically abusive husband ("AH"), who had repeatedly threatened to kill her and their three children. The order included language specifically limiting when and where AH was allowed to see the children.
