I know many people my age still have a lot of nostalgia around Harry Potter and might be tempted to watch the new HBO TV series.

Please, I'm begging you, do not tune in.

J.K. Rowling is singularly motivated. The new Harry Potter series is a cash cow intended to fund anti-trans bigotry.
J.K. Rowling is using her wealth attained from the "Harry Potter" series to create an organization dedicated to removing transgender people's rights "in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces.”

I could never articulate what my problem was with this model, and why I was so cranky about it down to my bones. This is a brilliant read, and where it lands had me almost standing on my desk cheering.
Our standard three-act story structure tells us that things will get worse and worse, until some massive confrontation — after which they'll be great.

This expectation is really bad for us, especially when during this current traumatic moment.

one day this transgender moral panic will be over and it will be a relief, but before that, it's best to remind people that it's no longer about protecting children or women it's about killing minorities and erasing them for a fascist world.

it will be over soon. i have hope for a better future.

Analogies are never perfect, but this one is instructive. If you’ll indulge me:

What would you call it if a German government ordered books from Jewish authors removed for being “subversive” and “anti-German” while having no problem with white supremacist literature?

Because that’s what this is.
Adolf Hitler's “Mein Kampf” is still on U.S. Naval Academy shelves. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and “Memorializing the Holocaust” are not.

An order by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s office led to a purge of books that are critical of racism — but preserved volumes defending white power.

i’d forgotten this particularly exhausting part of a Trump Administration: the nonstop gaslighting. Every day, from every member, on every subject. It’s a reminder that mere political operatives could never maintain this discipline. This is abuser behavior from the bone marrow.
It's a small thing in the context of <waves hands around> but this is still laughable North Korea stuff, including "224 pounds," "scaring [sic] on the right ear from a gunshot wound," resting heart rate of 62 bpm, and below-average blood pressure.
President Trump is expected to need a follow-up colonoscopy in 2027 (acting President Vance for a few hours?) and his doctor’s totally objective analysis notes Trump’s “frequent victories in golf events.”

"Tough on crime" is never about actually reducing crime, but just about social control, example number quabillion.

"Tough on crime"--a term that should always get scare quotes bc it is never used sincerely--is not about safety. It's about making disliked groups suffer.
Missouri Republicans say crime is the reason why the state has ended local control over STL police. But crime has fallen to a historic low. Grassroots organizers say the state takeover is a ploy to shut down the very reforms that have made St Louis safer.

Members of Congress swear an oath to defend the Constitution.
If they are too scared to follow through on that—not unreasonable, many really are getting harassment and death threats—then they should step down so someone who is up for the job can do it.

People would actually care about gutting FEMA if they understood it meant the possibility of things like not receiving tornado warnings, no search and rescue teams coming to save them in an earthquake, no flood insurance, no extra medical help, no money to rebuild.
this is a good example of the attitude that has led democrats down the road to disaster. it rests on the belief that public opinion cannot be shaped or mobilized or moved, only reacted to

a maximalist strategy of opposition against every nominee as unqualified would have stood a better chance of creating the kind of public outrage that might have led to more republican defections, but i'm sure the imaginary family that chuck schumer relies on to guide his decisions disagreed
Schumer's strategy of allowing/encouraging Dems to vote for the "normal" nominees in order to try and peel off Republican defections to block Hegseth/RFK/Gabbard appears to have completely failed.
It appears there is little to no resistance from Senate Republicans to the nomination of RFK Jr. as HHS Secretary
