What I would really like to see from any of the so-called radicals in UK politics is to move from their comfort zones and actually home in on real unaddressed issues like the overwhelming government bias towards the largest companies - which could make a real difference.

Getting some teas for the rest of the family and came across this monstrosity of 21st Century consumerism.

On the one hand, what the hell, Twinings?

On the other hand, I'm all in for it.

Not the point I know, but a question: if you're changing the gauge, do you add a new rail between the existing two or just undo one and move it in a bit?

1st option means you can carry on using the tracks while the job is done & gives you some interoperabiity, but is much more expensive, I guess?
do you have any idea how much you have to piss somebody off to make them change their gauge
#Finland will begin to #Russia - proof its rail network, integrate with EU train infrastructure.

The Finnish government has announced the conversion of its rail network from Russian gauge (1,524 mm) to European standard (1,435 mm).

This is bizarre. Like the editor of the guardian or mail or any other paper complaining repeatedly about the front page lead they decided to run with.

Very good example of what's wrong with broadcast news - they've given up deciding for themselves what is or isn't news and what the priorities are
It’s a sign of how insane the news cycle is these days that this historic failure of government policy got just one day of news coverage this week.

Not saying that’s right or wrong, but it’s astonishing how quickly the agenda moves on these days.
BREAKING: UK’s response to Covid was “too little too late”. Acting faster could have saved 23,000 lives in England according to the public inquiry.

Boris Johnson presided over a “toxic, sexist, chaotic culture” in No10, where rule-breaking seriously undermined public confidence.

My philosophy has always been this:

If you try to convince me something is shit, you’re wrong & will fail.

If you try to convince me something is great, you’re right & winning at life.

If we all agreed on everything life would be dull; it’s how we go about our differences that’s important.

Immigration has halved due to increasing restrictions. This has had no impact whatsoever in terms of reducing the popularity of the far right. You would have to be an idiot to conclude that restricting it even further will make a difference.
This is first time I’ve heard the govt making the Labour argument for controlling immigration.

Mahmood argues that controlling our borders is good for race relations, because uncontrolled immigration is feeding far right rhetoric and tensions.

Expect to hear a lot more of that.

Hi from Mastodon, new Bluesky followers! ^_^

So you know, I can't interact with you if you don't give me permission! If you want that, it's two clicks, here's how:

## Hey Bluesky users! I’m on Mastodon. I like it here; it’s neat! But I know folks on Bluesky I’d like to follow, preferably _from_ Mastodon. And I can! _**If**_ they give permission. So if you want to let me and other Mastodonians follow your Bluesky account, here’s how. This link goes to a special Bluesky account profile: https://bsky.app/profile/ap.brid.gy If you click on the link, you’ll see the profile. If you then click the profile’s “follow” button, that will give me and others from Federated services like Mastodon permission to see your posts and follow your _Bluesky_ account. That’s all there is to it. You don’t need to know anything about Mastodon, or have a Mastodon account; you’re done! We can now follow you and see your posts. If _you_ want to follow _me_ from Bluesky, you can do that already. You don’t have to do anything special, because I gave _my_ permission a while ago. Here are my account profiles as seen by Bluesky users: * My Mastodon account * My Wordpess blog, which is my same bullshit, but in longer form. These act just like Bluesky accounts to you, but I’ll only see your replies if you give permission like I described above. Otherwise, I won’t see anything. And that’s it! So… welcome to the world of non-billionaire-hijacked social media. Let’s make some connections! #BlueSky #Facebook #meta #Twitter

As a kid, I ate up making-of docs and books and magazines. A lot of us raised on the holy Blue Peter / Doctor Who axis of access did the same. I find it baffling when people have no interest or feeling for the creation of the stuff they love, how it actually *works*.
