I had my disagreements with the BBC under Tim Davie but he was a decent man doing a difficult job.

To see Trump's White House claiming credit for his downfall and attacking the BBC should worry us all.

It's absolutely 100% immoral and even illegal for Trump to stop SNAP and increase hunger for 42 million Americans, but it's a reminder how weak a poverty-targeted program can be. There is strength in universality. If every single Trump voter got SNAP, there's no way Trump would stop it. We need UBI.

Just a reminder. This isn’t normal. The North was not always poor, regional inequality was never this great. This is a direct result of decades of government policy-making that has eroded the economies and democratic institutions of the North. No Voice = No Wealth.

I'm asked all the time about the cost of universal basic income and often reply that the lack of UBI isn't free and that poverty actually costs us trillions of dollars a year that we pay for in all kinds of ways instead of UBI. Well, here's a study showing the lack of UBI also costs 9 years of life.
How Income Matters for Longevity
According to research, older adults in the lowest 20% of income die 9 years earlier than their wealthier peers. And 80% of households with older adults—or 47 million—are financially struggling or are ...

The victory of @plaidcymru.bsky.social is a very important reminder that there are 3 strands of progressive power in the UK - sadly unaligned and in conflict:
People who care about equality
People who care about the planet
People who care about communities
- why are we forced to choose?
