This has gotten surprisingly little attention — it's not even on the front page of @science.org right now — but it's really hard to describe what the SAFE Research Act would do to US science and scientists without sounding insane

Maybe it’s the relentless downpour of tragic news but this one hit me very, very hard.
TRAGIC: María Florinda Ríos Pérez de Velásquez—a 32-year-old mother of four who immigrated to the U.S. from Guatemala—was senselessly shot and killed after showing up for work at the wrong home in Whitestown, Indiana. She should still be here.

In Chicago, a woman was driving to get coffee when a DHS vehicle fleeing an angry crowd crashed into her car. Armed agents jumped out of the vehicle, yanked her door open, pulled her by the legs out of her car at gunpoint, held her incommunicado for hours, then released her with no charges.

Doing away with the PPFP would be devastating for the UC. Important 🧵 please read 👇
The President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, PPFP, has been a jewel in the crown for faculty development and recruitment at the University of California for years and the results have been an expanded faculty with almost 100% tenure rates — unprecedented success.

Anyway, I don't know who needs to hear this right now but faculty, grades are NOT there to take students down a peg, put them in their place, or determine a student's value

They should reflect student learning, if they must be given at all
People spend way time worrying about whether students are getting too many A's and not enough time considering the possibility that people who busted ass so hard that they got into a place like that might be the kind to be high achieving

Too many FACULTY think grading is about breaking people, too

3/3 But this is still an encouraging early sign that Congress (or at least a bipartisan committee in the Senate) DOES NOT WANT TO SLASH SCIENCE FUNDING.

But we also need to keep up the pressure too!!!

So continue calling your reps especially if you're in an appropriations state or district.
Are you from one of these states? Then we need your help to save American science!

The Senate Appropriations Committee will be marking up the President's Budget Request for science on Wednesday. People have been saying the proposed cuts "decimated" US science, but that's wrong: they are apocalyptic

There's also a bone-deep despair for their future that undergirds everything. But at least I can't just collapse.

This makes me sad and angry. I got my start in science through a PREP funded postbac, it set me on a PhD path that changed my life. This is yet another pointless and cruel action to hobble the future of American science.
I have learned that the directors of ALL: PREP, IMSD, and IRACDA programs across the country have received similar cancelation notices. This follows previous cancellations of MARC and URISE programs. This further dismantles the mechanisms that enable scientific training opportunities for SO MANY.
You want to know the best way to show thanks for chairing a study section? Early the next morning sent them a termination notice for their PREP training grant.

I am heartbroken 😔 MARC is the reason I’ll be graduating with a PhD, and as a soon-to-be postdoc, IRACDA gave me hope that I could realize my dream of research and teaching. PREP was going to be the next stepping stone in my amazing undergrad’s research career. We deserve so much better💔
