Here's what VIA Rail's passenger rail network looked like until 1990.

In the next post, what it looks like today.

It's not hard to see how we've gotten to this point. Politically, DCs are the easy choice. Taxes stay low, existing homeowners see their property values increase, we can say developers pay the cost. But truely we're adding the cost onto the rents and mortgages of new residents.

On a gray day like today, are the "shadows" of tall buildings really a good reason to block housing in the city?

Shadows aren't a problem in summer either!

Classic car brained Toronto. Never challenge the status quo. Climate goals, congestion, Vision zero be damned!
Fail to pay $3.35 TTC fare: $425 fine

Fail to pay $12 vehicle parking: $50 fine (recently increased from $30, where it was for decades)

See if people can figure out from this whether Toronto city councillors ride the TTC or drive cars.

27% of households in Chicago have no personal vehicle, but locally that number can be MUCH higher.

In many areas of the South/West Side, and along the entire lakefront, at least 2 out of every 5 households are carless.

Has anyone attempted to quantify lost economic output from the housing shortage?

As bad as things are in America, it’s so much worse in the rest of the anglo west.

Canada’s home price to income ratio is higher than any state except California or Hawaii
If your state’s price to income ratio is over 4.5, your state has a housing shortage and you need to dramatically reform zoning to legalize more homes.
The solution is to build more homes.

Hundreds of listings have appeared across platforms like Kiiji, Facebook, Karrot, and Craiglist for #TTC tokens and paper tickets.

People are trying to offload their fares before they get devalued on Dec. 31, 2024 (TTC won't accept as fare).

One listing explains: "I can’t use them all up by then."

Each and every fresh snow reveals how much we’ve over-designed our streets and roads for cars, making them faster and more dangerous for everyone, and how much space we could reclaim for people and public life if we thought about street design differently.

We call them #sneckdowns. #sneckdown
