Municipal issues, data, transportation, history, yelling at drivers. Serious ideas, unserious person. Lots of original content. Pretend journalist. 🚲👶🌳

Centretown, Ottawa, Ontario
I've got a new idea for how I can get the city to reduce the through-traffic on my street.

The 1955 Traffic and Transportation Plan for Ottawa has an early design for the Queensway. Look at some of these proposed interchanges downtown with absolutely zero regard for the neighbourhood they would have bulldozed through.

"Do you feel that my area is seeing a considerable amount of intensification right now?" - @timtierney.ca

No, not particularly.

Wow, what a terrible motion from Councillor Kitts.

WIDER streets in front of schools. The complete opposite of what we need. This needs to be rejected.

Great question, terrible answer.

The city's long-term fiscal health and lifetime infrastructure costs are not "outside the scope of the new Zoning By-law" - zoning is the root cause and most important factor.

Look at these 3-storey homes ruining the character of the neighbourhood.

The 'Ottawa Room' at the Main branch of the library is awesome. Go check it out while you still can! I could spend months in there.

Beacon Hill-Cyrville pays $11.6million/year for policing - Somerset and Kitchissippi pay a combined $50.9million/year for policing.

Perhaps these councillors can simply see that spending more money on the police doesn't reduce crime.

Crash on Bank Street in the Glebe involving an OPS cruiser. Bank is currently closed, buses being redirected.

Light dusting of snow and the traffic guy on the radio is reporting over 20 collisions on the roads this morning. Yet what we here constantly is that you can't BIKE in the winter.
November 28, 2025 at 2:12 PM
Doug Ford: "Hey we said no bike lanes!"
City: "They're bus lanes."
Doug Ford: "They're only 2m wide!"
City: "The bus."👇

Wow, illegal parking being removed and driveways being narrowed during a road renewal in Westboro. I wish the city would do that in Centretown, but here they keep reinstating the illegal parking when they do renewals.

I've filtered Ottawa's traffic collision data to show only collisions with injuries for each year, and then added the speed camera locations present in those years.

It looks like speed cameras have made the roads much safer.
November 15, 2025 at 1:34 AM
There are two speed cameras on Walkley Rd between Bank and St Laurent that were installed in 2024. In 2022 that stretch of Walkley had 34 collisions with injuries. In 2024, after the cameras were turned on, there were just 4 collisions with injuries. Speed cameras work.

The home of C.H. Mackintosh, the former Mayor of Ottawa (1879 to 1881), and owner of the Ottawa Citizen (1874 to 1892) is currently for sale.

It has definitely seen better days.

Google Maps is once again directing traffic From Bronson, Somerset, and Gladstone, heading to the Eastbound 417 down Percy Street to avoid traffic on Bronson. If this were any other Local Road in the city, there would be traffic calming and modal filters to prevent this from happening.

Ottawa's 2026 Draft Budget has $92.8M allocated for road resurfacing and rehabilitation - a drop in the bucket when we have a $2.3-billion backlog in resurfacing.

One of the strategic failures of #OttCity Road Safety Action Plan is the lack of communications about where speed camera revenues are spent.

I got the list via #ATIP. Here are some projects that were only made possible because of these revenues. Full data at tinyurl.com/4brrmh9j

Ontario property assessments haven't been done since 2016 and it's getting ridiculous. Suburban homes are paying much lower property taxes than they should be.

Annual property taxes:

You would think the mayor was being ironic here when he says that we can't acquiesce to demands of wealthy sports owners, right before he says we need to be careful we don't lose the other wealthy sports owners in the same stadium 🤣🤣

The city finally released updated traffic collision data today! I haven't even had a chance to look at it yet. But why is 2023 missing?

"Why do very wealthy multi-national business owners in Kanata support Lansdowne 2.0"

Uhh... because they're very wealthy.
