🧵1/ I’m releasing my documentary “A Visit to a Homeless Shelter for Transgender Ugandans” in 5 parts.

In Part 1, we begin in Kampala’s “7 hills” to show how far from industry trans ugandans are living—as they try to avoid eviction.

In honor of the unjustly banned Link, I invite folks to post their mutual aid below this thread. I will repost need as long as I am able.

As the holiday season approaches, and temperatures drop, mutual aid is going to become more important.

Consider giving what you can. If you can't, repost.

Elias, one of the immigrants in this case, was detained by ICE on his way to his dialysis treatment.

It was one of countless warrantless ICE arrests we've seen in DC.

While detained, Elias was denied the care he needed and his health worsened. He died last week — just days before this ruling.

your kind of suspicion (is that really a service dog) has routinely impacted actual disabled people with service animals. I have a seizure alert dog who does not look like a service dog (a lab or shepherd) and have routinely experienced suspicion and distress as a consequence.
My case would be that it’s enough that you’re regularly seeing it (ie people with their dogs in the store/on planes), and that it going unchecked is damaging to the proverbial social contract.

Honestly, this idea that it's "cheaters" who make disability accommodations, SSDI, etc etc tougher is nonsense. The number of people gaming the system is always, ALWAYS dwarfed by the people who need accommodations and don't get them.

Why?

Because that's how the system is designed!

At the last MN Council of Non-profits conference, I sat in a session that was about accommodating autistic people in the workplace and this was something I found incredibly important: Job Interviews do not have to be a test of how good a person does 1:1 with surprise questions.
I often think about how if we designed job interviews to be more fair to autistic people, almost everyone else would have less trauma about them too.

As I posted earlier, this campaign is similar to panic about "boys in girls' sports" and, as commenters pointed out, "welfare queens"—and refugees! And DEI! Conservatives try to use outlier scenarios to stoke resentment and suspicion about any system that extends benefits to marginalized people.
One of the biggest impacts I’ve seen from the unproven idea that people are wrongfully using disability accommodations is that people stop trusting people with disabilities and in fact further restrict, remove, and demonize accommodations for people with disabilities in general
