Here’s the problem with this framing. Both parties have advocated for certain types of speech to get less protection. It is not the case that Republicans have suddenly switched their view here - it is that, with power, they are going further in punishing that speech than they have before.

Can't emphasize enough that America's undocumented problems are a GOP creation. It was Reagan who attacked the porous US border that enabled seasonal farm workers to move freely, causing many to fear leaving the US. Companies then realized they could underpay these "illegals," so jobs went to them.
