I've been saying for 10 months that the U.S. political system was starting to remind me of Guatemala and El Salvador, two countries I extensively covered. (don't ask about my anxieties over this)

This is a great comparison of the factors that led to the co-oping of the state apparatuses.
Is the U.S. showing early signs of state capture?

Naomi Roht-Arriaza compares patterns of state capture from four countries and highlights the warning signs emerging in the United States.

"Planners say the facility will also hold hundreds of mentally ill homeless people under court-ordered civil commitment and the effort will include an “accountability center” for those with addictions."
Under Trump, the draconian future of homelessness policy is coming into focus: mass internment. Utah is building a 16-acre site to detain up to 1,300 homeless people inside locked "accountability centers." This is profoundly alarming.

"What these documenters were more disturbed by was the ability of their friends and neighbors to continue functioning as if the world had not fundamentally changed."
Fascism is impossible without a culture of denial.

It is deeply unpopular and repellant. It cannot win unless millions of people actively convince themselves it is a passing phase or not as bad as it seems. This is why we’re stuck in this mess.

Fascism is Impossible Without Active Denial
Authoritarians aren't the only ones responsible for what's going on. Fascists rely on people denying the reality right in front of them to consolidate power

At least the Three Percenters, Proud Boys and other white power militia guys can wear their sheriff and police badges now.
Today’s Executive Order creating a *nationwide* military “quick reaction force” and setting up an online portal to permit random fascist vigilantes to join soldiers is one of the scariest things I’ve seen in U.S. politics in my adult life. Why is it not getting more attention?

As someone who has learned from and reported on families who had loved ones disappeared in Guatemala, Chile, and Uruguay, I can say that countries rarely fully recover from the trauma and harm of disappearances. At the same time I have no idea how to report on this happening here in the US right now

"Law enforcement can now involuntarily institutionalize “individuals with mental illness who pose risks to themselves or the public or are living on the streets and cannot care for themselves.” Who makes the mental health diagnosis? Unclear. What institutions will these people be sent to?"

Worse than that. Read this EO carefully, it says anyone they see as essentially out of their mind OR homeless. It’s repeated under every point they make. This here allows to take anyone they see as a “threat” and put into an institution.
Now Trump will treat being homeless as an offense to justify imprisoning people without trial in the growing set of concentration camps that he avoids calling what they are. All in the name of safe public spaces and less crime. Unconstitutional, but hard to stop.
