We’ve now taken the lead by 91 votes! 🤯 This thing is certainly not over! Over 1,000 ballots have been challenged, so if you haven’t tracked your ballot yet get on it! Our trusty volunteers have been working hard to "cure" ballots so they count! We're so close!

We just might have managed to legalize some cool housing options in Seattle...
If you've tried and failed to follow what Seattle's new zoning might allow, I've got you. Here are 4 case studies showing some of the exciting ways new incentives line up with current demand and emerging household demographic trends, with a focus on stacked flats.

"Harrell directed his city council staff to perform tasks for the Royal Esquire Club [...] The work included filling out insurance paperwork, collecting membership dues, drafting an event proposal, and contacting dozens of people, including city employees, to invite them to club events."
Harrell said through a spokesperson that he did nothing unethical, as the club was in his district, and council members are supposed to help constituents.

@publicola.bsky.social and @theurbanist.org.web.brid.gy are straight up more informative for Seattle politics and I'm happy to be a monthly supporter of both! If you only read @seattletimes.com you'd likely be confused about what is at stake in this election
Of COURSE the Seattle Times guy who thinks online news isn't real news is railing against news vouchers, which he says consist of Katie Wilson "taking $10 million from taxpayers" to fund people he looks down on—independent news producers who now all have to compete with each other for supporters.
News vouchers resurface in Seattle mayoral race
News vouchers may sounds promising, especially in the words of Seattle mayoral candidate Katie Wilson, but they are deeply problematic.

She’s Never Run for Office Before. She Could Be Seattle’s Next Mayor.
Katie Wilson is drawing comparisons to Zohran Mamdani. Though she has a thinner political record than the New York sensation, she’s on the doorstep of City Hall.

Yay! Green stacked flat bonus (amendment 91) passed! This version is important because it rewards both preserving existing trees *and* adding new trees and green space to lots that don't yet have enough to preserve.
Committee voted down Strauss' tree-only amendment, and then approved Nelson's alternative that gives a density bonus to stacked flats for developers that either retain trees or achieve a green factor.

Again, the desires of incumbent homeowners not to allow renters near them should not be the primary basis for land-use decisions that will determine where new residents can live, and whether existing residents who don't own houses will be able to stay here, for the next 20 years.
