THE RISE OF END TIMES FASCISM

My first major piece of the new Trump era, co-written with @astra.bsky.social.

The governing ideology of the far right has become a
monstrous, supremacist survivalism.

A cat 2 cyclone (hurricane) heading for an Australian capital city with 2.4M people 😳. Even as it looses energy crossing the coast, as the last floods were only a few years ago, the capacity for direct and cumulative impact is large. Essentially all inhabited places on the planet were warmer in 2024 than the recent baseline. Most of the ocean area too.

About 1/3 of the planet experienced record high temperatures.

We know why.

And we know how to fix it.

All surface temperature products for 2024 are now live.

All show 2024 is the warmest year (very clearly).

The estimates of the change since the pre-industrial (1850-1900) are more uncertain but range from 1.46 to 1.62ºC.

It is therefore *likely* this was the first year that exceeded 1.5ºC.

I have a new analysis over at The Climate Brink exploring how rates of warming have changed over the past century.

Post-1970, GHGs (CO2, CH4, etc.) would have led to just under 0.2C per decade, but falling aerosols (SO2) have increased that rate to 0.25C. www.theclimatebrink....

COP29 is wrapping up this week and people are (finally) calling for the process to be overhauled to *maybe* reduce oil industry influence over it. New documents we uncovered reveal they used a little known UN org to infiltrate from jump. First of three stories: drilled.media/news/IPIECA1

Have greenhouse gas emissions finally peaked? Not quite yet, but experts think it will be soon. It'll be a momentous turning point, but also just the start of a new phase of the critical journey to net-zero: www.npr.org/2024/11/13/n...

When will greenhouse gas emissions finally peak? Could be soon
Fossil fuel emissions have increased steadily for almost two centuries. Now, the world may soon reach an important turning point for climate change.

The conventional wisdom is that the rich world will be asked to receive climate refugees from the Global South as the planet heats up and the climate breaks down, but if Europe and the UK turn into northern Norway from AMOC collapse, won't at least some of those Global North people need to move?
The dangers of a collapse of the main Atlantic Ocean circulation, known as Amoc, have been “greatly underestimated” and would have devastating impacts, according to an open letter by 44 experts. One of the signatories, ⁦‪@rahmstorf‬⁩ tells me why.

“Emissions reductions haven’t happened as planned. If you still want to get to 1.5°C, you need overshoot.”

The overconfidence with overshoot is that people think it is possible to get to 1.5°C without overshoot?

Latin America is burning so agrobusiness can produce soy and beef in a system that contributes to climate change and prevents global food sovereignty. For us in the Global South, tackling land redistribution is key to get there. I recently wrote about this:

New from @jmijin.bsky.social & me: we can & should nationalize the Powder River Basin coal mines for managed decline. Right now, US coal policy takes 2 contradictory paths that could lead to chaos given mine/plant mismatches: use more (CCS) or use less (close). PRB could be a key governance demo.

The overshoot myth: you can’t keep burning fossil fuels and expect scientists of the future to get us back to 1.5°C
The net zero approach of the Paris agreement has become detached from reality as it increasingly relies on science fiction levels of speculative technology.
