I have no doubt that most of the rats who flee the Coalition in this term will be fleeing because they think it isn't culture-warry enough and these people will infest and overwhelm any alternative that looks like getting traction.

I recently read Edward Said's 'The Question of Palestine' originally published in 1979. In it he proposed a potential future, sadly the shallowness of our thought and understanding failed to appreciate an alternative.
Thanks for your analysis.

Frankie Goes to Bethlehem: myth, music and the power of love
In 1984, Frankie Goes to Hollywood released a reverent nativity ballad that revealed how myth, music and Christmas still speak beyond belief.

You'd normally have to go to the coincidence factory to see a coincidence that perfect.
Scoop: the pro-teen social media ban lobby group 36 Months was funded & co-staffed by its co-founder's ad production firm that was simultaneously making gambling ads

The federal government has ignored calls for a gambling ad ban while pursuing the social media ban.

the campaign against Wells is specifically designed to remind Albanese not to try anything opposed by corporates like murdoch (including the ABC).
So of the top 30 biggest spenders of family reunion entitlements, Anika Wells is 28th

And within that top 30 most are from non-East Coast state which means airfares will cost more

The entire ‘scandal’ is bullshit

And then there's also on-line gambling!
Hypocrites.....
Just a reminder the media org that has been trumpeting that it cares about kids and their futures and wants social media banned is the same that worldwide has been running climate change disinformation and lies, ensuring the kids will live in a worse world
The November monthly temperatures have been released and 2025 looks set to be the 2nd hottest year on record.

Remember when warming apparently stopped in 1997?

That is more than 0.5C ago.

Because too much liability? Doesn't seem to trouble the existing operators. Anyway, as public utilities they could be granted a degree of legislated immunity, if that is really necessary.

Because too complex to implement? Nonsense. There is existing, mature open-source software available.

Absolutely stunning to see Australia's teen social media ban rushed through while every single government, educational institution and probably a huge number of parents are frantically force-injecting chatbot slop into the mind of every single child in the country without a second's hesitation

In a time when governments need to learn, they continually demonstrate that they have learned exactly nothing. Government is about being the custodian of the well-being of 26 million people - this is not custodianship, it's incompetence bordering on negligence.
EXCLUSIVE: Funding and support plans for national disability insurance scheme participants will be generated by a computer program and staff will have no discretion to amend them, under a major overhaul of the NDIS to be rolled out next year, @australia.theguardian.com can reveal.

Labor's stacked committee just recommended passing their FOI destruction bill - despite overwhelming evidence AGAINST it.

Greens, Coalition, Lambie AND Pocock all filed dissenting reports. When everyone else says no, maybe listen?

We know FOI is broken: late responses, heavy redactions, missing documents. Labor's bill fixes none of this and would make many aspects worse.

Time to abandon this hubris-driven attack on transparency and start again. This is the Greens recommendation in our dissenting report

Useful thread.
Let's say, extremely hypothetically, this social media age ban works. Under-16s are effectively blocked from mainstream social media platforms. What happens?

They'll look for non-mainstream platforms. Spoiler: it could get quite bad.

Thread.
Okay, so now it’s law but we still don’t know how we’re going to do it or where we’re going to do it or who will be responsible for doing it or who will (I hope) be stopping it from becoming yet another mass privacy invasion by the social media platforms. Great. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...
