Ok, so let's talk a little bit about how the Romans understand magic and why they think putting phallus-shaped objects (fascina, sing. fascinum) are witch-craft related and how that connects to our word 'fascinate.' 1/
Hmmm: Borrowed from Latin fascinātus (“to enchant, bewitch, fascinate”) [makes sense so far] from fascinum (“a phallus-shaped [lol wut] amulet [wait what] worn around the neck [WHAT THE TARPEIAN FUCK] in Ancient Rome; witchcraft”) ... itself of obscure origin.

Interesting. I was told that both boats that had been struck down were verified to be carrying narcotics and had connections to criminal groups, but we couldn’t see any of the totally real evidence. Surely fishing would be perfectly safe under such conditions?

Florida Reps aren't hiring me as a consultant, but if they did I would tell them:

a) Very soon, there will be schools filled with unvaccinated kids.
b) A lot of those kids are going to get sick like it's 1935. Many will die.
c) You will be blamed for it.
d) Democrats will campaign on your failure.
About this Florida vaccine story:

When they were little - 1 yr and 3 1/2 - my two older boys, who’d had all their shots, got whooping cough.

We asked their pediatrician what would’ve happened if they hadn’t been vaccinated.

“Oh, they’d have died.”

This is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read. We can use our words and actions to tear each other down, or build each other up and create community. I try to choose the latter.

This is a good thread about modern capitalism and markets, but for me this is the key, right here. when corporations moved from
mechanisms to mitigate risk
to buffers to avoid responsibility. 1/x
Also, companies and committees have become tools for diffusing administrative responsibility. They permit abusive behaviour to be perpetrated via a proxy that immunizes those responsible from accountability and punishment. That needs to be fixed.

Thread; reminds me of this year's Budapest Pride being called "thousands" even in nominally left-wing English-language media, with multiple hundred thousand people present - as far as I could determine, possibly the biggest protest in Hungarian history ever. But, trans flags so it doesn't count?
The BBC News website has pages & pages of coverage related to farmers protesting inheritance tax, including events where only a few hundred turn out.

In London yesterday 100,000 people marched for trans rights, and nothing.

Imagine if it was 100,000 anti immigrant activists, they'd cover that.

Wired and Teen Vogue have done some of the best reporting in the Trump era. Ars Technica one of a handful of good remaining tech pubs.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

Republicans did it.

Republicans did it without a single Democratic vote in the House, without a single Democratic vote in the Senate.

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.
