This morning, Rep. Mark Gamba and I have an op-ed in the @oregonian.com responding to the bare bones transpo funding bill #OrLEg passed Mon. We need significant, strategic investment in our infrastructure - it's critical both for safety and to support our economy.

Opinion: Oregon needs strategic transportation investments, not stopgaps
While legislators authorized some new funding for transportation, the need for more significant, strategic investment in our infrastructure is critical both for safety and to support our economy, writ...

I posit that of instead of spending bucketloads to hit Wilson's 1500 shelter bed target, Portland could probably take a greater chunk out of homelessness if we just gave the money to people.

Maybe we should pilot it, test the hypothesis.

Sous chef Charlie Schaeffer used to sport a tee, "Of love and soup, the latter is best."

No point in the US calendar year embodies that maxim better than the weekend after Thanksgiving.

All of this feels like blind #solutionism. These things get rolled out because corporations expect profit, not because there’s any coherent public vision guiding them. There’s no proper framework shaping the direction, nor are cascading consequences of these shortsighted decisions properly assessed.
Really can't overstate how problematic robotaxis become at scale:

"Urban traffic is constrained by the fact that getting around by car either requires (expensively) paying someone else to drive or (inconveniently) driving oneself. Without such constraints the result could be brutal gridlock."
Self-driving cars will transform urban economies
A robotaxi boom is coming. The impacts might be broader than you expect

A fitting moment to bring back this old transit meme. However they’re powered—gas, hydrogen, electricity, or driverless—leaning on cars instead of investing in quality public transit is still a poor long-term strategy.

As someone who's been practicing "buy local" and "reduce, reuse, recycle" for three decades now, I say the U.S. green movement needs to pay more attention to supporting closed loop, symbiotic, and regenerative business on the supply side, and more upcycling and sharing economy on the consumer side.

‘The Street Trust, said the effort to send the transportation package to voters “doesn’t protect struggling households, it leaves them stranded – threatening transit for seniors, making it harder for kids to get to school safely, & blocking basic services like plowing roads & filling potholes.”’
The anti-safety, anti-transit, highways-only effort in Oregon is moving forward.

Always grateful for the relatively quiet city on holidays in the U.S. - a stark reminder how much of our lives we involuntarily give over to polluting automobiles.

I don’t know why Oregon democrats don’t frame this as an anti-worker issue where Republicans are opposing a jobs program.

Without the transportation package there are jobs that will be lost and our transportation infrastructure will decay.
Where's the progressive push back on this anti-tax campaign / gubernatorial gambit? Even Trump’s gov't closed DOGE, yet Oregon's anti-gov't extremists want to drag us backward by defunding our transportation system.

Opponents of Oregon gas tax increase say they’ve cleared key hurdle to let voters weigh in
The initiative needed roughly 78,000 signatures by Dec. 30 to qualify for next year’s election. Backers say they have more than 150,000.

My sense is the people that signed don’t realize they’ve just cut winter plowing, maintenance, transit, and basic safety measures. Going to be a rough year.

The legislature *could* pass something else, but it would have to be substantially different than HB 3991.

maybe these chatbots and LLMs pose such an existential threat to higher ed (esp. four-year colleges) in the U.S. because neoliberalism's already devolved them, for the most part, into job-skilling, assignment turn in centers.

(just my ignorant, dropout take, ofc.)
Asking a chatbot isn't better than nothing -- it's worse than nothing. Unless the goal isn't learning but rather "turning in assignments".

A bit more about Wilson's intensified police activity. While running errands this am, witnessed PPB stopping folks in dangerous ways. 1) blocking the closed-loop streetcar on Grand, and 2) bike lane on Foster.

In both cases, they could have used a non-busy car travel lane or nearby parking lot.

Reminder: Wilson's homelessness plan was never vetted, has always been unfunded. Plus, the city was out to lunch during the state transportation package where additional cleanup dollars could have been negotiated (...we barely held onto the 50/30/20 formula split FFS).

Just when I thought I couldn't love the Groce Out more.

"Miller said customers have used about $500 of the $5,000 set aside at his Lincoln City store. McGinty said customers have used about $1,000 of the $5,000 at his McMinnville business."

Practical compassion FTW.
After federal rules nixed their plans to offer food-insecure people a discount, I found three Oregon grocery stores that are using the honor system to help SNAP recipients. My story today: www.oregonlive.com/business/202...
Feds told Oregon grocers they couldn’t offer 10% off to SNAP recipients, so they got creative
The honor system is in place at three Oregon stores, now offering discounts to all who need it.
