I also want to note as an addendum that "pushing tutorializaton on players" and "having no resources at all" are not the same thing. I'm dating myself here but a LOT of 90s adventure games had an NPC you could _ask_ for hints but who would not typically volunteer them and many are beloved characters

maybe I just have to settle for acknowledging that this is why I'm not the target audience for a lot of mainstream games. I want games that reward me for being thoughtful about them and expect it of me, not ones that are terrified I'm looking over at youtube on the side

I'll be honest: dunno that I'm willing to buy a "we HAVE to force tutorialization down players' throats" argument in a period where games like counterstrike, dota, minecraft, roblox et al are some of the most popular games in the world

YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT! I HAVE WRITTEN A NEW ARTICLE!

this one's a bit weird; rather than doing my usual "trying to organize my thoughts and building a winding case that builds on itself," I decided to show you what my EARLY article creation process looks like:

docseuss.medium.com/some-loosely...
some loosely organized thoughts about dialogue sysin games
think of this as me trying to find out what parts of dialogue choices are load bearing game design and what else can be done with dialogue.

If you ever fall in love with an arcade game that doesn't fit into one of the small handful of existing big genres, prepare to spend the rest of your days being frustrated about the fact that nobody will ever make a successor to it or develop it in any way

i feel like a lot of gamers use 'game design speak' in the same kind of maladaptive unhealthy way that people tend to use 'therapy speak'. It actually balances your humours to sometimes just say that some shit you hate is fucking dogshit

an underrated cool function of the new valve hardware is the fact that the steam controller can be tracked by the steam frame. i'd love to see shenanigans like astro bot rescue mission come back for this format, where the controller is tracked in the game world and can shoot out tightropes and such

it's a shame that the new guy that runs gobo linux is a cryptocurrency guy with an obviously ai-generated github profile image because gobo seems like the only distro with a filesystem that would suit my purposes

What's more interesting is that the few I have run into who are using it try to hide it like it's some deep shame they'd rather outsiders not discover. I now make it a contractual condition of working with me: no AI. This has yet to lose me any work worth doing.

As a guy who skips gently across the surface of hundreds of studios, I can say this is absolutely untrue. I've met more that are ardently against AI than I have people who use it.

maybe part of the reason i'm not having the readability problems other people are in lumines arise is because i'm using vr mode? everything seems pretty clearly defined though so that doesn't feel like it's it

No joke, I think video games are the main reason I ended up being good at this stuff because the games I played required reading to understand the story and play the game.
