Actually I think I'll go further and say that if you can clearly & consistently distinguish good vs bad frustration in games, then you basically have a reliable framework and have succeeded as a critic. If u think that all frustration is bad,all frustration is fine,or only rely on vibes then u failed

The Second-Order Streisand Effect is a social phenomenon where if a party makes an effort to censor information, discussion and news about the censorship paradoxically leads to an increased awareness of Barbara Streisand, a musician whom most "Zoomers" would probably have otherwise never heard of

it's so fucked up that the first three metroid games are some of the best games ever made and ii is straight up an artgame and then all the rest especially the remakes seem completely dedicated to ruining everything those first three accomplished

Chinese and Taiwanese RPGs have been experimenting in various ways with reaction-based additions to turn-based battles for ~decades~ at this point.

And it's OK if you don't know that! But ~maybe~ we could just assume that the genre doesn't begin and end with games English speakers have heard of :)

New article time!

This one's about Planescape: Torment. I was commissioned to cover it, so I have. I was... disappointed to find I didn't really like the game. I tried not to be too mean, but I really, really disliked this game's treatment off women.

okay here’s the one about planescape
Over the years, I have taken some commissions to write about various video games. One of those was to write about Planescape: Torment, and…

If someone tells you there's a nice little shop or pub in a village nearby, you ought to be able to get a bus to it and spend money there, then come back home in good time. Like, that isn't some wild, utopian dream. It just makes sense in terms of social and economic life.

"Buttons attempt to normalize" though I think is a pretty strong thought to have. From bad stuff like AI, or even lame stuff like Discord's 'gift nitro' button(lol), but even good stuff sometimes like sharing stuff. A button in modern apps says "This is a normal, encouraged thing to do"

Honestly whats more fucked up is less about it being easy or hard but more X goes as far as to *encourage* it. People throw around the the term "normalize" but that's what that shit is trying to do. You can't stop someone from disrespecting your work, but you *can* avoid encouraging people to do it.
"people can still download your art from bsky and feed it into AI" if gamer behavior has taught me anything, just one extra button press is more than enough to annoy a MASSIVE amount of people into not making the effort

Light is something I spend a lot of time thinking about (which I’m sure is going to sound weird to most) and this fact is something that sometimes gnaws at the back of my brain, because even if we think we know, we can’t entirely comprehend this or how much has ‘been taken from us’ in this way
I think people today don't understand just how dramatically the night sky has changed - it looked like it does in super remote areas *everywhere* before the invention of electric lighting, and light pollution that obscures the sky has gotten dramatically worse in the last 25 years.
If you ever have the experience of seeing a night sky out in the deep countryside you can understand this; it really is a fundamentally different experience, and I can't imagine it not being formative to people.

A nice intro to Boktai, a Kojima-directed GBA action RPG with a solar sensor built into the cart that fuels your weapon in-game.

It was rad. Also it got a fan-made sequel this year too which uses internet weather services to replicate the effect, and tag-team protagonists better at day/night.
