I absolutely adored Lumines Arise in every way. But it’s hard to put into words why I love it so much, or what it’s like to even play - i liken it to finding that one painting at the art musuem that your just inexplicably drawn to. It pulls you in and makes you cry. www.inverse.com/gaming/lumin...
'Lumines Arise' Review: A 10/10 Masterpiece And A Puzzle Game Epiphany
'Lumines Arise' is a stunning puzzle game that genuinely transcends the bounds of what most other games can only dream of doing.

feels like the reason "git gud" has a bad reputation is more because the people saying it don't explain how to (and usually suck themselves) more so than it being bad advice in general

tangential but I suggest we term the negative form where a repulsion to certain new trends drives us back to the old

Wrote a post talking about the design of Shinobi, Rolling Thunder & Elevator Action and how excellent of a run n gun template it was+how it developed over the years. I'd love to see more indie games take a crack at developing this, cuz Shinobi devs sure as fuck won't

I feel like a honking tryhard douche for using phrases like "Game Literacy" but it's kinda one of those things right like you just need to know like "Oh hey some games use difficulties as warning signs and encouragement to explore other places" and now you can *make* a decision.

Like I don't think it's even wrong to criticize the start of DS1 or w/e it's not perfect, but it's a modern assumption that if you can go somewhere, this is content ideal for you now. More and more people stop learning to listen to their virtual pain receptors and give up their agency.

Love Tara rightfully boiling over this lol. It's so funny that this was something people brought up constantly when the game came out as GOOD design, but as years go on, games train people more and more to NOT actively engage with and respond to what they're experiencing.
I'm watching a vid on Silksong and they're saying Dark Souls 1 had a 'bad' opening section (firelink) because, while there are multiple paths, there's only one you can fully pursue. Thus the others are 'fake' and it's a 'guess' as to whether you have a 'good' or 'awful' time...

I will say again, Nostalgia is the Devil's Word when it comes to media, especially games. Like that word barely means what it's supposed to mean at this point and it's damaging our ability to communicate about the history of games.

Posts should yellow with age. The older they are, the older they should look. Nothing is immortal and you defile the name of God by pretending otherwise

This is an excellently-written review, and maybe the first I've seen that considers both the base quality of the game AND its moral and artistic integrity, especially in the face of the studio's AI use.
For Arc Raiders to ride the wave of human sociability all the way to the bank, while also being so contemptuous of the thing that makes us social animals in its own workflow demonstrates a lack of artistic integrity that I find impossible to ignore.

sort of incredible to read a review that doesn't just made a vague nod at AI being bad, but actively reckons with the ways in which falling obsessively to AI usage actively obliterates the artistic intent and integrity of the work you've made.

this is already being said elsewhere but it's just unbelievably pathetic that the dems are more worried about one of their own candidates winning than they ever seem to have been about losing

this one appears to be a) extra long and b) aimed at more or less me exactly. if you're curious about the intersection of text, dialogue, and plot in gamedev - this is great stuff
YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT! I HAVE WRITTEN A NEW ARTICLE!

this one's a bit weird; rather than doing my usual "trying to organize my thoughts and building a winding case that builds on itself," I decided to show you what my EARLY article creation process looks like:

docseuss.medium.com/some-loosely...
some loosely organized thoughts about dialogue sysin games
think of this as me trying to find out what parts of dialogue choices are load bearing game design and what else can be done with dialogue.

Why? How do they manage it? Because leftism is rooted in the study of economics and human behaviors. So there's a lot of cause and effect analysis going on.

The stancils of the world post charts to feel good about themselves. The leftists look at patterns of behavior to determine the future.
