The whole "transition is a one-time Sex Change Procedure you get from a team of doctors" trope is a lot of things but most of all it's just vastly downplaying the self determination involved in transition

"Transgender" has an astonishingly more transphobic origin than "transsexual". More racist and classist, too.
Others have been thankfully talking about this more, but much of the original “transgender/transsexual” split comes from an effort to DISTANCE trans identity from transsexual women, including by narrating us as gross and embarrassing AND unimaginative and conformist.

The real difference isn't about "medically transitioned people" vs "non-transitioned people". It's about those who root their trans politics in survival vs those who are more concerned with a weirdly online discourse politics that prizes language, shibboleths, "validity", identity etc.

I think my big take is that it's right to note that attacks on transition are central to the anti-trans project and that queer theory models of "transgender" that decentre transition as a necessity are full of shit.
