The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

It’s truly tragic how many of these US war criminals like Cheney never face justice and die in their peacefully in their homes in their 80s and 90s. I want to be happy he is dead but I am not. The million people he killed didnt get the luxury to die how he did.

Between you and me, if I were a freshly elected mayor who had just called out the toxic behaviour towards my predecessor, I wouldn't then go and reward one of the central figures in creating that toxicity by making them chair of an influential subcommittee... 🤦‍♂️

Wellington's new mayor Andrew Little says Tory Whanau faced 'toxic behaviour'
In a speech to supporters on Saturday night, Little said Whanau had shown courage during her time as mayor.

I hate to lose my leftist street-cred, but from what I've seen, voters seem quite positive about Labour's CGT, so maybe it's not total failure? #nzpol

In Philip K Dick's short story "Faith of our fathers" an illegal anti-hallucinogen allows you to see the country's leader is actually horrifying biomechanical monstrosity & this is a pretty good metaphor for living in Lower Hutt & hearing people fawn over Chris Bishop.

Judith Collins calling open fascist Kristi Noem a friend and posing for photo ops with her would have her hounded out of politics in any reasonable democracy - and a functioning, non-propagandistic media would lead that charge

Unfortunately we have neither of those things in NZ

Sad to hear about Jane Goodall, I heard her speak at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington once and her stories about chimps and humans were so moving, I started to tear up. She will be greatly missed

In 1976, African nations boycotted the Montreal Olympics because New Zealand stood with apartheid South Africa. Nearly 50 years on, that echo lingers and the stain remains far longer than we care to admit to ourselves.

Look I don't know how deep the psychosis in the cult that follows National goes, but you literally can not have a growing economy for 6 months when the stats show it's been declining.

They wear sunscreen at night & moan they can't hear the TV when they've hit the mute button don't they.
Nicola Willis incorrectly claims economy has been growing well for the last 6 months & blames unimplemented tariffs for the monstrous ~1% GDP drop.
The statistics prove Ms Willis a liar. And of note, Treasury had forecast positive growth, and zero recession as at Nov 2023 #nzpol
