The great @suzannevega.bsky.social releases “Luka” as a single this weekend in 1987.

Upon hearing it, Prince (whom she never met) sent a letter. “‘Luka’ is the most compelling piece of music I’ve heard in a long time,” he wrote. “There are no words 2 tell you all the things I feel when I hear it.”

I'm watching CNBC. These anchors are so angry. They really didn't believe he'd do it. They're actually just now, 10 years into this shit, realizing he's a maniac hellbent on revenge and there's no grand plan for the markets. Better late than never but holy shit.

It can happen here – it is happening here! - but the “It” is likely to look different than anything that came before or elsewhere.

In a stable democracy, the range of outcomes is narrow. But in America, we must now widen our horizon of expectations far beyond what most people are comfortable with.
We all want to know exactly what is happening and where it will go. But a crucial point from Steven Levitsky: "...this is uncharted territory... no democracy even remotely as rich or as old as the United States has ever broken down." Or if you prefer, got this close to breaking down.

A serious look at U.S. history would have suggested that there was really no reason to assume some innate democratic national disposition.

While it holds no secret key to predict the future, America’s past experience - which includes plenty of state authoritarianism - urges us not to be complacent.
What does the U.S. look like in five or ten years?

I was asked to reflect on this question, alongside other scholars. In a stable democracy, the range of plausible outcomes should be narrow. But for America, it now includes complete democratic breakdown and full-blown authoritarian rule.

At every turn, the response to the rise of Trumpism has been hampered by a lack of political imagination – a lingering sense that “It cannot happen here” (or not anymore, anyways), fueled by a deep-seated mythology of exceptionalism, progress gospel, and willful historical ignorance.

I, too, thought that the American electorate would not re-elect such a morally debased person such as Trump, especially now that it is clear who he is and he campaigned on all of the dreadful actions he is now taking. How wrong I was.
The decisive test of our society in my lifetime was the 2024 election and our failure was spectacular and total. I will never again have any faith in the American electorate to do the obviously right thing.
