makes me weep to think of the gifts robbed from us because unaffordable housing has made it difficult for people to pursue their passions and hobbies

Unfair. Michael Scott was an accomplished paper salesman before he was named manager of the Scranton office.
NEW from me:

Several CBS News staffers and insiders told me that the network "is not a good place now" amid the imminent arrival of Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief, who one source likened to Michael Scott of The Office based on her lack of qualifications.

CBS News staffers are ‘literally freaking out’ about Bari Weiss taking over newsroom
EXCLUSIVE: ‘People are using words like depressing and doomsday – feels like some sort of doomsday,’ one source told The Independent about the mood inside CBS News right now.

@anamariecox.bsky.social fell in love with your writing during the blogging days (Swampland 🤔), loved Dog Days, even tried to invite you as a speaker at a forum!

Most of all, I admire your candid discussion on your mental health. It’s helped me as a teacher and human being.

Luke: thank you for your wisdom Master Yoda

Yoda: no I’m saying it’s bullshit I have to sit on a log with this guy

Obi: yeah I wasn’t going to say anything but he murdered me

I’ll say this much for Malcolm Gladwell: if I was out socializing and somebody really liked his stuff, it was a useful clue to bail on that conversation.

Mumford is required reading. It's time for me to go back and reread this classic
I just finished Lewis Mumford’s magisterial exploration of city life.

Published in 1962, it has some of the sharpest takedowns of car-centric society I’ve ever read.

Mumford: “We have sold our urban birthright for a sorry mess of motor cars. As poor a bargain as Esau’s pottage.”

Thinking ahead to the upcoming school year, I want all of my reflecting/planning to start with this document once again:

1⃣ what will my "new" be as a teacher?
2⃣ what do I want to get "better" at?
3⃣ what is a "strength" I want to double-down on?

The level of exhaustion I feel from people who have opinions on teaching who shouldn’t have opinions on teaching is just… really something. This idea literally NEVER works. If it did… it would have by now… and all of our problems would be solved. I truly just can’t with it anymore.

Being a historian, people ask me if I think the US is living through Germany 1933.

I answer no, analogies are always imperfect but to me it feels more like Russia 1999: a blatant theft of state assets and liberals in a fugue state, refusing to believe the arc of progress is bending against them.

Agree with so much of this. People’s learning cannot be measured by the same rubric, and deep learning takes time.

You allow that time and connections happen. The connections lead to wisdom. There is a reason why wisdom is equated with age. Let’s give students time to be wise.
This analogy for our work as teachers—finding a path, not forging a road—immediately sits with me as one of the most useful + important I've come across.

Read this! 👀
I’ve been reading a lot of Wendell Berry lately. #SubstackSky #TeacherSky
