I think of hummingbirds as tropical, or at least warmer weather birds...so this Rufous hummer at the top of Steens Mountain.9500 feet above sea level and next to a snowbank was a bit jarring. #birding

With iNaturalist, GBIF, and an increasing amount of scientific literature online, it is now possible to identify many bugs from all over the world without having to get physical specimens in front of an expert. Last 5 years especially.
Please give me an unironic list of things that have gotten better over the last ten years because I’m spiraling.

I’ll start: you can buy an enormous TV from Costco for like $100 bucks now.

A nemesis bird is a bird you've always wanted to see but you keep missing despite your best efforts. Last week I FINALLY got my nemesis Spruce Grouse. Then I saw @thebirdist.bsky.social got his nemesis, Connecticut Warbler, so I thought I'd post this old comic about nemesis birds. Do you have one?

An amazing moment as a stunning Red-tailed Racer (Gonyosoma oxycephalum) makes its way back up into the trees. I love finding these vibrant, charismatic snakes on the move in the daytime.

Oh my goodness. Look at this strange and beautiful sea slug.

It is completely transparent except for a complex network of pale tubules that runs through body and looks like an armature you would use if you were making a model of a sea slug. Amazing!

Trogonoptera brookiana, Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing.

Malaysia’s national butterfly is quite a thing of beauty. Its black wings with emerald green feather-like markings, bright red head, and blue wing accents isn’t even its most remarkable feature. It’s probably the fact that it measures close to 15 cm
